I think it is fair to look at pre-season "success" with suspicion. I think it is also fair to look at improvements in play style and tactics and see potential for real success. I think Aaron Gordon will be really good this year and modest improvements from other players plus better schemes suited to our players will equal more success- but I also think a lot of the season will depend upon the adjustments Vogel makes or does not make as the season goes on. I really really hope that this is the year that everything starts to come together though.

We'll see how that works for us. We still need to put the ball in the basket and with 9 out of 10 of the 1st guys to play being the same as last year I just don't see much of an improvement on that end.
  5. 2017-2018 Official Season Discussion Thread

we completely changed our entire offensive and defensive philosophies. The team plays completely different. The entire team played fantastic defense in the preseason.
  6. 2017-2018 Official Season Discussion Thread

I did, it was the preseason. Payton still can't shoot or see the basket and Vuc is still not a good defender. Adding Isaac to the SL instead of Ibaka or Ross may yield a little bit but it is not going to take us from sucking to being good. If all of our other new guys are playing limited minute 3rd string what have we really done to get much better?

I have to say, I am much happier with the Afflalo signing over a Jeff Green/ Ben Gordon type. One, we are paying him less, which is always a plus. But more importantly, he is the type of vet you want to have on your team, a guy that has been very professional his entire career. It also doesn't hurt that he is still probably a better player than 2016-2017 Jeff Green (though he was obviously not very good last year either), but will most likely not get much playing time as we have better players in front of him.

we have a style of play that fits our personnel. pushing the pace allows us to better take advantage of the 11 or so guys on the team that are able to handle the ball on a fast break. The switching defense seems to have helped Payton's defensive issues. We have 3 guys in the rotation who should be premier perimeter defenders. I'm highly confident the team will be a top 10 defensive team this year. Gordon looks great. you take that and add a rotation of payton, ross, Fournier, vucevic, simmons, biyombo, Isaac and [backup point guard] and you should have enough collective good games to do something. Instead of Hezonja, Meeks' injury of the week, Onuaku, Wilcox, Zimmerman, Rudez at the end of the bench you have (mack or augustin) Hezonja, Afflalo, Speights, Birch, and Iwundu. The latter group is more competent and has a variety of situational role players that are actual nba players. This team is a team built for the regular season and, unlike last season, seems to actually have given us tangible factors for optimism in the preseason.

we're making the playoffs this year. Just thought I'd let you guys know.

Payton's shooting is always going to put a ceiling on what this team is capable of. but that ceiling isn't "playoffs" it's "getting past the second round". The new scheme for defense has helped everyone in the preseason. We have a style of play that fits the roster.

I assume by that statement that you found reason for hope in the preseason even though EP still cannot shoot and Vuc does not play full time defense! Definitely not a Vuc hater, but he still takes plays off while standing and watching opponents take it to the basket! The general consensus has it that when EP gets others involved his scoring, or lack thereof, is not important. Sorry, I am not in agreement! The added depth (except for pg) brings hope, but improvement from within (Gordon, Isaac, etc) is imperative for improvement. Looking forward with anticipation for a Much improved ORLANDO Magic

I understand the feeling of hopelessness. Judging from pre-season alone, this is fortunately a completely different team. With continuity and player development, alongside a change in philosophy, I expect this team to win early and gain confidence as the season unfolds. Payton can be effective without his shot if he can get everyone else involved.

I expect us to miss the playoffs by a few games but Gordon and Isaac will give us hope

So Basically we have added 1 new guy total to the starters and 1st bench squad. How much better can we realistically expect to be? Our starting PG still can't shoot/see the basket and our starting center still can't play D.

Just read an article on B/R about Jeff Green, and I was kind of surprised on how he looks at an NBA season and I think it's kind of odd, that may only be me though. They asked him what he though went wrong with Orlando and he said he doesn't think about the season he just moves onto the next, I would think he would think about his performance, his teams(performance), how he can improve etc. maybe that's just me and that's why I'm not a pro.

The greatest challenge to Aaron breaking out is if one or more of our guys tries to play hero ball.

I was thinking about this too. Let's say he's the roll man 6 times in a game. If he shoots 50% on those that's 6 points. He'll get 2 or 3 transition buckets a game that's 4 points minimum. Let's say a couple of putback buckets a game is another 4 points. That's 14 points without even looking to score really. If he cuts off ball let's say 3 times he's likely to score 2 out of the 3 for another 4 points. If he attacks a couple of close outs and/or faces up a couple of less mobile bigs on top of deep sealing smaller guards when they switch onto him he's well into 20 point territory without taking a jumper. Obviously some nights he might not manage as many offensive boards or the other team might rush back on defence but in general I think something like 18 points is achievable for him.
