2014 Free Agency Watch Thread

Recommended Posts

I just posted this to show how credible CBS sports is. I thought this was true till I realized if this would have happened that Jameer would have been crucified in each and every recent* thread in this forum.

haha, we have the decision everyone has been waiting for... M-WILL will take his talents to...wherever is gonna overpay him the most out of frenzied desperation.

this free agency is like parents fighting over tickle me elmos or whatever hte hottest toy is and then buying them off ebay for way more than they're worth

Exactly. It puts our signings in perspective. Everyone should be happy.

2016 is projected by Stu Jackson to have an 80mm cap.

The people whining about frye for getting less than 8 then really have no idea what they are talking about.

Even though it was painful letting Jameer go, it was I believe a classy move by the organization to allow him to choose a place where he can compete for a championship because I believe he deserves it. Looking at this lineup, I think it is pretty obvious that the last two years have been doing several things very well.

1. Cleaning up after Otis. We finally have cap space and a good balance of contracts

2. Getting younger, a lot of veteran pieces have left and filled with potential talent. Some could have been traded for more, but its clear the organization has a plan instead of the throw darts at the board approach like Otis seemed to do most times.

3. Good influence on a young locker room. That appears to be a major draw for a lot of our decisions, having guys who will come in and be professional around the newbloods. Even the targets we've been looking at, Patrick Patterson, Chandler Parsons, Greg Monroe...have all been known to be good guys in the locker room.

All in all, I am very happy with how Henny and the crew are approaching this rebuilding process. Instead of just throwing all our money at three players and then filling in with minimum contracts, we're building from within and with this young nucleus I think we will continue to see the Magic get better and better every season. I like a nucleus of Oladipo, Payton, Gordon, Vucevic, and even throw Harris in there. I think you add defensive minded with hustle-on-every-play type of players and that becomes the beginning ingredients to a championship team. Even though we're not there yet, I can see these guys continue to get better and maybe adding 1-2 more pieces via free agency/draft and we could be in some serious business.

2015 -- 2 picks

2016 -- 2 picks

2017 -- 3 picks (3rd pick will either be a 1st or 2nd from LAL)

To quote the immortal Otis...I like our team boys. I like our team.

I don't.

Henny came into a mess, but what we have now isn't going anywhere. I don't foresee a very vast improvement over the last couple years.

What really gets me is getting rid of Afflalo and Nelson, and then bringing in downgraded replacements.

Don't get me wrong. I understand WHY we got rid of Afflalo and Nelson. And the signings of Gordon and Frye in and of themselves don't bother me. We weren't ever in the LeBron / Carmelo / Bosh sweepstakes, and given our current state, a free agent like Pau, or that variety, is absolutely pointless.

What I don't understand is the combination of trading Afflalo / releasing Nelson, AND signing Gordon / Frye. It seems like, at best, a lateral move, and more realistically, a downgrade.

Sure, on their own, I like all our guys. But as a group? Making up an NBA team? Not so much.

We are going to have to wait on Oladipo, Gordon, and Payton, and while my prospect scouting can be completely off and I can be completely wrong, I don't really see a future superstar in any of these guys. I don't see a Kyrie, John Wall, etc. on this squad. I see, at best, a bunch of serviceable players, but nobody that's going to carry this team above and beyond.

People keep talking about clearing the cap room mess that Otis got us into, but cap room for what? We cleared cap space from Afflalo and Nelson to use what we freed up on... Gordon and Frye??? Also guys that aren't going to take us to the next level.

It feels like we're just spinning our wheels, stuck in the mud, not actually going anywhere. 3 top 10 picks in 2 years, and no legit #1 star anywhere on the roster. So we've been in "tank mode" for 2 years now, and haven't reaped the benefits of it. Mid tier free agents that aren't a vast improvement, if any, over what we got rid of. And loads of cap space that we're not using on anything of substance.

I mean, however long this rebuild takes, I'm here. I'll watch the games this year and follow the team like I always do. I'm not bailing anywhere.

But I don't see a turnaround on the horizon. Not anytime soon.

Yea, I can be completely wrong, and Oladipo, Gordon, and Payton could all turn into superstars. I'll never be so happy to come back with egg on my face. But I don't foresee it. I see quality pieces, IF we had actual top tier players to lead our franchise. I even see Oladipo being a HEAVY part of that core.

But I don't see the players we have suddenly developing into a bunch of high quality players that are going to turn the Magic back into a contender.

We couldn't have gotten a "#1" in the draft where we were selecting. Oladipo, Gordon, and Payton all have the potential to be all-star players.

It's been two years. No team can turn around that fast with what Otis left us. And don't forget that young players tend to grow and get better. I think we will be seeing a lot of that this season.

Letting go of Afflalo and Nelson frees up playing time for the young guards. Ben Gordon gives some competition for minutes to keep them from getting complacent. Frye fills a position of need the team has been lacking.

Let's see how thing play out before we label this offseason a failure. This should be a fun team to watch. I think they'll surprise a lot of people.

We have a top 40 protected 2nd round pick from the Lakers this year I believe. And we traded our own 2nd round pick in the Payton deal so it's possible we only have 1 pick this year not 2.

Seems like we're taking a "Moneyball" approach to the team.

Henny must really believe we can hit the jackpot next year with Free agency.

You could be right. It was a little confusing but here is my link for what I put. It looks like it all depends on how the Lakers do next season? I could be wrong though.

Our second round pick is going to the Sixers.

Meanwhile, we get LA's pick in the second round unless it's in the 31-40 range. So it's possible we end up with no second round pick.
