"Did Orlando Overpay for Nelson ???"

This morning, Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld.com tweeted the terms of Jameer Nelson's new deal, and the figures are higher than many may have imagined.

"... He'll make $8.6 mil in 12-13, $8.6 mil in 13-14, $8 mil in 14-15," Kennedy wrote. "Last year is only partially guaranteed ..."

On a per year basis, that's basically the same money that Houston paid to land Jeremy Lin (three years, $25 million), and also right around what Phoenix needed to sign Goran Dragic (four-years, $34 million). And in Lin and Dragic, those were two of the top point guards on the free agent market right after Deron Williams and Steve Nash.

That makes no sense.

Then why bother insisting on shedding contracts packaged with Dwight,? Those teams (Houston) would want that cap space to put a convincing supporting cast around Dwight. They would give up more assets like picks/rookies etc in exchange for taking on less bad contracts packaged. Orlando's not getting every asset that would be valuable from Houston: Lamb, Parsons, Jones, White, Raptors 2013 pick, 2013 pick, 2015 pick. The more Orlando demands Houston to take in bad contracts, the less assets Houston will be willing to give up.

Signing any one player to a higher contract than necessary to stay above the salary floor is never smart. Get more free agents who are still only paid what they're worth then. That makes a team with assets who can be traded down the road, even if just for a trade exception. Teams who overpay players are stuck with them. They can't be moved, and their teams perpetually stay bad as long as they do so.

It does when you consider the duration of Richardson and Big Baby's contracts. Jameer will have fewer guaranteed years. Also, after this season Jameer becomes an expiring contract. An 8 million dollar expiring contract isn't a bad asset to have.

How can you have cap space to sign Jameer for 6.1M and not Lin for 5M

Because Jameer was already on our team so we didn't actually need cap space to make room for him.

This, plus I think "Linsanity" fans are going to be in for a severe disappointment when this guy comes back down to earth. Dude had a horrific turnover rate, and I don't think he is better than Meer. Lin's value was inflated by great performances (once you look past the turnovers) on a VERY small sample. Guy has 5 good games and suddenly he's only a step below DWill in terms of FA market-value? No thanks, I'll stick with Nelson.

Are you new? How have you been on this forum since 06 and don't know the answer to that question?

Not to single you out, but this comment here is a synopsis of the whole offseason arguments regarding signing Jameer/other people and "building a team around Dwight."
