DeAndre Liggins

Recommended Posts

Might as well have one for our other draft pick

Measuring in at a long and lean 6-6, Liggins is a good overall athlete, and while he’s not super explosive, he possesses fine leaping ability and nice speed in the open floor due to his stride length. Born in 1988, Liggins is a year older than most of his classmates due to the additional year he spent at iconic basketball school Findlay Prep in Las Vegas. Skilled, smooth, and capable of making some difficult passes look easy, Liggins offers an assortment of offensive tools, but his highly questionable decision-making held him back from being an efficient player last season.

When functioning as a primary ball-handler, Liggins shows solid ball-handling ability, but his tendency to get tunnel-vision to the rim as soon as he receives an outlet pass and the way he seems enamored with holding near half-court in some half-court sets limit him considerably. Liggins is the type of player that on one play will turn the ball over immediately by telegraphing his initial pass to the wing before splitting two defenders in the lane with a no-look pass on the next possession, before forcing a contested three on the next. Posting an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.23, the Chicago native is a polarizing figure with the ball in his hands, ranking amongst the top-10 players in our database in assists per-40 pace adjusted, but ranking second in turnovers per-possession as well. Not showing much restraint when deciding when to push and when to trot the ball up the floor, Liggins has a natural feel for making the tough pass in traffic, but his penchant for the spectacular doesn’t compensate for the wide array of mistakes he makes.

This last video is a good representation of what Liggins can bring to the table. Hustle and pesky defense. This highlight is against 1st pick Tobias Harris and forum favorite - Scotty Hopson.

Probably his best all around game came against Ohio State which is why I put this video on here.

Liggins Highlights on the second video:

1. Off the dribble shot followed by driving lay up- 1:00-1:14

2. Transition pass for score - 1:25

3. Driving lay-up and one followed by long 2pt shot followed by great low post pass - 2:18-2:42

4. Driving lane pass out for 3 - 2:44

5. Driving bank shot (lot of contact) - 2:55 - 3:02

6. Great on-ball defense before the screen was set - 3:03 - 3:11

The Magic are hoping Liggins can give them some defensive help at shooting guard if they don’t resign free agent Jason Richardson.

“He’s a tough kid who isn’t afraid to work,” said Magic general manager Otis Smith. “He was one of those guys who was a little unnoticed at Kentucky, but he came up big when he was called upon.”

The Magic considered trading into the first round, but they didn’t find what they liked. Smith said he was more interested in acquiring veteran help to improve the team. He said there is a chance of a trade could come before July 1.

The Magic do not have a good history with second-round picks. Since the team’s inception in 1989, the Magic have not had a second-round pick spend more than two seasons with the team.

They are hoping that last year’s first-round pick, Kentucky center Daniel Orton, can contribute for the first time. Because of knee problems, Orton did not play a single game last season.

Awesome. The best highlight that they could come up with for him to start the first video was of him missing a 4 ft shot and putting it back it. This dude has skills written all over him.

And yeah, I get he plays defense, but typically the guys who pan out that have zero offensive skills are bigs, not smalls. He won't even be around the basket to get garbage points and won't even have to be defended enough to prevent layups.

The Magic then selected University of Kentucky shooting guard DeAndre Liggins with the 53rd overall selection in the draft. The 6-foot-6, 2020-pounder gives the Magic some insurance at the shooting guard position with Jason Richardson becoming an unrestricted free agent and J.J. Redick recovering from abdominal surgery.

This guy hides his weight pretty good

You do realize this guy is also a hustle player? Hustle + Defensive player with a decent three point stroke. Sorry, I don't see much wrong with this pick as a second rounder. Sure, people are sour that we didn't grab Moore, but I like this guy, and I like Harper too because I feel he can actually be a useful talent if he bulks up a bit. I just hope Liggins makes it, he does have some potential.

Eh, when you enter a draft because you don't think you're going to get any playing time as a senior that's red flag number one.

peaking at 8.6 ppg on 42% shooting is red flag number two.

losing your starting spot towards the end of the season (but gaining it back toward the end) is red flag number 3.

There were guys with more potential out there. I don't think he's an NBA player. I'd be happy to be wrong though.
