My 6th Rebuild 6 Report post Posted March 12, 2007 It was the 99/00 season. John Gabriel had made a bunch of trades trying to get enough ending contracts to go after Tim Duncan and Grant Hill. Towards the end of the season the roster looked like this... Ben Wallace Pat Garrity Darrell Armstrong Corey Maggette John Amiechi (however its spelled) Ron Mercer Chauncy Billups Earl Boykins Chuck Atkins The key guys being Maggette, Billups, and Wallace. That summer we went and drafted Mike Miller, Quinten Richardson, and Keyon Dooling. Mike Miller we happen to draft because that year the Magic were lucky enough to stumble upon those players. Wallace, Billups, and Maggette could have been signed for a bargain. That summer we could have still signed TMac and forget Hill. SL for the next 7 years: Wallace Magette TMac Billups (add any player you want here) We would have been NBA champs the year Detroit won. What's happened has happened. The Magic still tell us "Wait 3 years." Its kind of like the Money Pit "How longs will the house be done?" "2 weeks." The truth is the Magic will never be a great team because the owner only wants to make money. He is the new Donald Sterling of the league. He only cares to make the playoffs in the first round. If we truly had a winner like Mark Cuban we would be the Dallas mavericks. I blame him for all the Magic troubles of the last 12 years. I wish he went through with selling the team like he threatened to a few years back. Hey Rich, that threat gave me hope that we could get a owner that wanted to win. FIRE RICH DEVOS!!!!! lemonice1 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2007 Devos agreed to sign the best talent available at the time, which meant taking on 2 max contract players. The Magic went after Duncan and Hill. Duncan resigned with the Spurs, so we went after Hill and T-Mac. If you remember at the time, T-Mac was by far the more risky signing of the two. Every GM in the league would have signed Hill in a heartbeat. Hill's numbers the year before he signed with us: 25.8 ppg, 6.6 rebs, 5.2 assists Hill was just entering his prime. He was a perenial All-NBA first teamer. Don't blame the Magic for that signing. Orlando had to trade some players to get the cap space to sign 2 max contracts. Ben Wallace was a Bo Outlaw type player when we let him go. Washington let him go after the '99 season, so it wasn't just the Magic that didn't see his potential. Since he went undrafted, I'd imagine most teams felt the same way. Billups was a journeyman at best when the Magic acquired him and then cut him. It would have been nice to keep Maggette, but he was all potential and little production when he was here (he was a rookie after all). I'm sure every team in the league could look back and play this game. I'm pretty sure the Hornets regret trading Kobe to the Lakers for Vlade Divac.
FENDI 4 Report post Posted March 12, 2007 We drafted Quentin?? The thing is, who would have known that Grant Hill would turn out like this? There is no point to dwell in the past.

Nike 2 Report post Posted March 12, 2007 Well, to be fair, none of us knew the potential some of these guys had. Hindsight is 20/20, but still... it hurts to see the line of former Magic players who star in another city become longer and longer...
EnFuego 1 Report post Posted March 12, 2007 Interesting first post MagicAtic. Welcome aboard. I've often wondered what would have happen had we kept the heart and hustle team of 99/00. I don't know if we win a championship, but it would have been better that what we had instead. Then again, misery brought us Dwight, I doubt we would have been bad enough to get the number one pick with the team you mention. I wouldn't trade Dwight for all of those guys. djmase20 is right about our picks that year. Here's a recap of the first round of the 2000 draft. Probably the worst draft telent wise since the Magic have been in the league. The best player out of that draft was Michael Redd and he wasn't picked until the 43rd pick. 1- Kenyon Martin - New Jersey Nets 2- Stromile Swift - Vancouver Grizzlies 3- Darius Miles - Los Angeles Clippers 4- Marcus Fizer - Chicago Bulls 5- Mike Miller - Orlando Magic 6- DerMarr Johnson - Atlanta Hawks 7- Chris Mihm - Chicago Bulls 8- Jamal Crawford - Cleveland Cavaliers 9- Joel Przybilla - Houston Rockets 10- Keyon Dooling - Orlando Magic 11- Jerome Moiso - Boston Celtics 12- Etan Thomas - Dallas Mavericks 13- Courtney Alexander - Orlando Magic 14- Mateen Cleaves - Detroit Pistons 15- Jason Collier - Milwaukee Bucks 16- Hidayet Turkoglu - Sacramento Kings 17- Desmond Mason - Seattle SuperSonics 18- Quentin Richardson - Los Angeles Clippers 19- Jamaal Magloire - Charlotte Hornets 20- Speedy Claxton - Philadelphia 76ers 21- Morris Peterson - Toronto Raptors 22- Donnell Harvey - New York Knicks 23- DeShawn Stevenson - Utah Jazz 24- Dalibor Bagaric - Chicago Bulls 25- Iakovos Tsakalidis - Phoenix Suns 26- Mamadou N'diaye - Denver Nuggets 27- Primoz Brezec - Indiana Pacers 28- Erick Barkley - Portland Trail Blazers 29- Mark Madsen - Los Angeles Lakers
