that means he's opting to become a restricted free agent right? versus signing an extension with dallas?

No. It means he's opting to play next year on a one year deal to become an unrestricted free agent

This is so weird on so many levels.  We went from "KP is concerned about the franchise's future/culture" to "Knicks think KP wants to be moved and will assess deals prior to deadline" to "KP has been traded for some stuff" in like 2 hours.

Did he say something horrifically offensive to Knicks leadership?  Do they think his injuries are career ending?  Have they tampered and already know 2 max FAs are coming there if they clear enough room?

I think all of those things are possible.

They did this same thing a few years ago because they were the favorites to sign LeBron.

That's the smart thing to do. Every superstar is doing that now. Dal had to expect this.

From the Knicks’ perspective, moving on from Porzingis by attaching two unwanted multiyear contracts to him creates some tantalizing free agent possibilities for the franchise. By replacing Porzingis’ cap hold ($17.09MM), Hardaway’s salary ($18.15MM), and Lee’s salary ($12.76MM) with Smith’s modest $4.46MM salary on the 2019/20 books, the Knicks will reduce their commitments by approximately $43.5MM, which should open up enough cap room for two maximum-salary free agents.

The Knicks’ only players with guaranteed contracts for 2019/20 are Smith, Frank NtilikinaKevin Knox, and Mitchell Robinson. Armed with those youngsters and a likely top-five pick, New York will enter free agency with the ability to potentially land two free agents from a group that includes Kevin DurantKemba WalkerKyrie Irving, and others.

new superteam forming?

I have seen a interview with Kanter saying that they are gonna get somebody that will blow there mind. Some say Durant .. Kanter was saying he knows who it is.
