On the playoff discussion Bleacher Report just posted an updated NBA Power Rankings based on the draft and recent free agent signings.

Have the Magic ranked 27th just ahead of Philly, Sota and the Nuggets...see link:

Well that was a waste of time, those rankings are laughable.

Watching ESPN Ticker lists 3 notable summer league performances one of which was Dante Exum.

Says he scored 20 pts before leaving the game early with a sprained ankle.

While we watch Payton struggle with his game specifically his shooting.

Jury still out, imo.

Except we didn't pick Payton over Exum,we picked AG over Exum and AG has probably been the single best summer league performer so far.

Still a long way to go for both players but certainly bears watching, imo.

I'd agree with you if he didn't play horribly in 3 out of the 5 games last year and then was completely fine during the season. Payton doesn't do well in these types of games. He sucked in summer league. He sucked in the rookie sophmore game. If he ever goes to an all star game he'll probably suck there too.

I havnet liked Mo since he *****ed about Jameer making the all-star team over him. With that said the whole Cleveland storybook story is compelling and I find it hard not to root for them and their players. Hopefully the Magic can get it together so I can go back to hating them again.

Remember this?

This is a pretty good article that explains how athletes are taxed, and why Texas and Florida have an advantage in free agency over California and New York.

As a reminder, state taxes for athletes work like so: a resident of a particular state pays tax on all of his income — salary and endorsement — at his home state’s tax rate. Whenever he travels and plays in another state, however, he must pay tax on the income earned in that state at that state’s income tax rate. To avoid double taxation on the same dollars of income, the athlete is given a credit on his home state’s tax return for the tax paid to the other jurisdiction.

To illustrate, Kobe Bryant, as a resident of California, will pay tax at 13.3% on all of his income. When Kobe travels to Oregon to play the Trailblazers, however, Kobe’s salary for the year is allocated to his time spent in Portland based on what are called “duty days.” If Kobe spends four days during the NBA season in Portland and the season comprises 240 duty days, he would be required to allocate 4/240 of his salary to Oregon, and that allocated salary would be subject to Oregon’s top income tax rate of 9.9%. On his California tax return for that year, however, Kobe would receive a credit equal to the tax paid to Oregon so as to avoid paying tax on the same income twice: once on the California tax return, and again on the Oregon tax return.

In contrast, some states have no state income tax, and this huge differential between playing in big markets in California or New York (which has an 8.82% top rate) and no-tax states like Texas and Florida has largely wiped out any inherent advantage teams in high-tax states have in re-signing their own free agents, and greatly hindered their hopes of attracting new players.
