The Orlando Magic figure to be interested in the New Jersey Nets Troy Murphy if the Nets buy out the veteran power forward, reports Marc Stein of ESPN.com. New Jersey coach Avery Johnson has played Murphy just 18 times this season, and not once in the last three weeks, as he's focused on developing third overall draft choice Derrick Favors and Kris Humphries. Murphy isn't in the Nets' plans anymore, and as Stein explains, General Manager Billy King has allowed Murphy to step away while the front office works to trade him:

King says he and Murphy had reached a mutual agreement to try to find the 30-year-old Jersey native a new home -- preferably with a playoff contender -- if the [Carmelo Anthony] deal fell through and Murphy’s $12 million expiring contract was not needed to clinch the Pistons’ participation in the trade.

The Nets had agreed to send Murphy to the Detroit Pistons as part of a three-team deal principally involving Anthony, Chauncey Billups, and Richard Hamilton. As that trade is no longer on the table, Murphy's in NBA limbo while the Nets work to find a taker for him. Good luck with that. Though productive over the course of his career, back problems and his infrequent appearances have tanked Murphy's trade value, and it's unlikely the Nets will get more than pennies on the dollar for the Notre Dame product, just one season removed from averaging 14.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.

Stein names the Magic among the teams who will attempt to sign Murphy if the Nets' attempts to trade him fall through, but provides no further details. My expectation is the Magic see him as a reliable, productive veteran who can back up Dwight Howard effectively at center. And Murphy's fantastic three-point shooting--his career mark is 39.1 percent--would give Orlando yet another lethal three-point threat. However, concerns about his all-around defense abound, to say nothing of his health: Murphy's shooting 34.2 percent this season, and 17.4 percent on three-pointers. Further, his per-minute rebounding, though not awful, is well below his career mark.

Sounds good to me......

GO MAGIC !!!!!

Troy Murphy at back up C shooting threes?

Stan just creamed himself.

He'd have to play with Gil and Bass though. That way our defense could be the worst in history.

The New Jersey Nets, who backed out of the endless Carmelo Anthony(notes) drama for the time being, apparently has a new one: Troy Murphy has asked to be traded, and the team told him to stay home until a deal can be made, The Bergen Record reports.

The 6-11 Murphy, whose $11.9 million contract expires this year, has only played in 18 games for the Nets this season, averaging 3.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 0.1 blocks. For his career, which started in 2001 when the Golden State Warriors took him in the first round of the NBA draft, Murphy, 30, has averaged 11.8 points, 8.5 rebounds and 0.4 blocks per game.

His minutes per game have also dropped from 32.6 last season with the Indiana Pacers to 16 with the Nets this season.

Why? I mean instead of forcing non defensive players to play defense why not just hunt for one that just plays D? Easier said then done I know but still...

Because most people can play D, they are just too lazy to. Stan fixes that.

He's a warm body, and fits our system with his offensive game. You have to come to terms he might be the best available, and if we don't pounce quick, somebody else will get him. For the vet min, you could do a whole lot worse. Or would you rather have nobody? Or some Malik Allen clone?

Plus, he's never been to the playoffs before. Guys not named Vince become new players when they finally get somewhere they haven't been.

Murphy wouldn't be the worse pickup but we're just duplicating skill on the court. Its overkill. Having a coach like Stan is great but you gotta mesh offensive players with some defensive ones. It infects the entire team. When scoring isn't there and you got an all offensive team, heads tend to dip downward and motivation is all about finding points. Where if you got a defensive player or 2, it sparks a energy into the team that "hey, we can get points and easy baskets through defense, not just offensive plays". We need this if we want to win ANYTHING this year in the playoffs.
