The truth is that most of the time we know very little about an assistant's credentials until he's hired to coach a team. Thibodeau is the only assistant in recent memory that I can think of that I knew a lot about before he actually became a coach. Just because i'm not ecstatic doesn't mean there was anyone better to choose from. All the guys I wanted are out. There are many things Bill Simmons can be legitimately criticized for, but being a "stat geek" is not one of them.
