2012 Draft Discussion Thread?

Recommended Posts

Not going to drop on this draft at all. This is going to be one of the best drafts in the last 12 to 15 years.

seriously? better than the 03 draft?

say it ain't so.

I think J_Rich's contract is movable. It's not like he's getting payed $10mill per year. I think it could be moved to a team like Minnesota. Having Rubio, I believe they may take a trade of JRich and rights to Fran for the #18. JRich could play very well next to Rubio.

Don't forget. We can use the stretch option on J-Rich if we need to. It would save us $3M in cap room.

It's not the best draft in 12 years. This is basically another version of the 2008 draft but with fewer franchise guys and more impact starters/fringe all-stars.

yup, only one all nba type guy but almost the entire second half of the first round has players that should be good rotation players. A lot of players in the second round should stick on rosters as specialists.

I think Moe Harkless will be a steal for some team in the late teens. He's a raw talent, but his upside is HUGE.

This is a very deep draft, and does resemble the 08' class, minus the franchise players.

I couldn't agree more...I watched all of St. Johns games this season (fan) and his potential is through the roof. To think that he was playing the 4 & some 5 all year (out of position) due to the lack of size on the roster, and still won Big East Freshman of the Year (over the highly hyped Drummond) speaks for itself.... My feeling is if we trade Dwight and rebuild, Moe would be a great for us...but if we are looking for an instant contribution it might be tough

Just to put my 2 cents in:

1st pick in order of who I would like to see:

Royce White- The guy does so many things, and I think he could be one of the few all-stars in this draft if he can keep his head straight. He is a good rebounder and a great ball-handler and passer for a 3/4, and I think he'd cause a lot of mismatches at either position. This guy in a triangle offense as a 4, by the way, would be lethal.

Jeffery Taylor- Hard to put this guy behind White, but I have. His handles are the only real issue. Literally every other part of his game is stellar. He is the best athlete in the draft, he has turned into a solid shooter and will get better, and mostly his defense is LOCK DOWN. At worst, you're getting Thabo Sefalosha or Shane Battier type. That's a good pick with the 19th.

Marquis Teague- These top 3 are really close to me. This guy is a better player than people are giving him credit for. He should have stayed in college and showed what he could really do, but he's going to be a good player in the league. I think he could turn into a Tony Parker type of player, where he's score first, but is still a good passer and knows how to run a team. But that's maybe and down the road if at all. At worst, he's his brother.

Moe Harkless- I'm kind of going off of everyone else' talk with him, because I just see a smaller Earl Clark. He can't create his own shot, he can't really shoot, and he needs a lot of work on his fundamentals. That said, he supposedly can score around the basket and has a lot of athleticism. Like I said, I don't see it but if so many people do I'll accept him if Orlando drafts him.

Darius Miller- I know this is a huge reach. I'm not saying if they want this guy they shouldn't trade down a little. But this young man is super-skilled. I think he will be a better player than Kidd-Gilchrist. He's going to be a really good shooter from everywhere, he's a good passer, and he's a good defender. His rebounding isn't great, I know. But this is the kind of glue guy that really could have a huge effect off the bench for a good team.

Second round, where Orlando has a tendency to trade down or pick up extras:

Scott Machado- The fact that this guy is even possible for the second round is a joke. I know he doesn't have tremendous speed or explosiveness, and I know he's not a great finisher, and I know he's not a great defender against super-quick guards. But my god the guy can pass. I've seen him live a couple of times, and this dude just knows how to run a team. He can shoot, he can rebound well for a small guard, and he's the best passer I've seen in years. He's not going to be Rondo or Chris Paul, because he isn't fast, but he might turn out to be almost like a Steve Nash type of player who keeps players off him by being a good passer and gives them headaches because he can shoot.

Will Barton- They may have to trade up to get him, but he's so crazy talented he'd be worth it. He reminds me a little of Rip Hamilton, honestly. He's skinny, but his athleticism and offensive skills are first round worthy.

Kevin Murphy- Another guy they might have to trade up to get, but a guy I could see becoming a big story coming from a small school. If he can keep up with a higher level of talent around him in the NBA, his jump-shooting is crazy good.

Tu Holloway- Could be Jameer Nelson 2.0. He didn't have as great a season as people were hoping for this past year, but he still is a good scorer and solid passer. He needs to be more efficient, but that's really his only knock. A solid pick at 49 if you ask me.

Serious question, how far would y'all be willing to drop in the draft if it meant ridding ourselves of Duhon's contract?

I wouldn't draft again until 2015

I agree with everything that you said about Jeffery Taylor. Very solid player and will be great in the league.
