The Brian Hill show - yesterday 4/5/07

Recommended Posts

I got this summary from "lovehoops01" off the realgm message board. Of course I didn't hear the show so this is all I have to go off of. Thought you guys might be entertained by the coach and his thoughts.

quote:
Segment 1:

Where are you at mentally?

OK, not happy where we're at. Have to approach it same way, see where we need to make corrections, hold each other (player/coaches) accountable.

Said he told team it needs to play at the start of every game as if its back is against the wall and show a sense of urgency.

Says youth factor contributes to them giving up big leads, subconsciously leads to complacency. Good, veteran teams can't do that.

Raptors game: Jameer had good look but didn't knock it down. Hedo's side jumper...maybe should have driven the ball there instead of a 3. It was an open shot and he had it going so he didn't mind, but driving the ball would have put more pressure on the defense.

About the controversial foul involving Grant/Bosh. Bosh had Grant by arm so Grant grabs him back. Bosh wouldn't get ball anyway. Dwight would have gotten otherwise. Ref should have swallowed whistle.

JP caller. Question about defense collapsing at end of games. Anything we can change to hold leads down the stretch? Hill says it varies each game, depending on who playing. Against Toronto, had mixups where guys didn't follow game plan on pick and rolls and they got wide open drives to the basket. He says third-quarter defense was bad, but in fourth quarter, it was OK. He said all the Raptors points in final 7 minutes came from the free-throw line. (I didn't realize that. Now I'm even more ticked at the refs.) He says he was upset in the first half with fact that Tony wasn't getting much help from the other bigs defensively on Bosh. Praised Trevor for his D in the second half but acknowledged that it ended up in lots of fouls. He said everyone did a good job on Bosh in second half.

He says the biggest problems lately at the end of games have been offensive.

First break.

quote:
Segment 2:

Talked about injuries to Wizards' Butler and Arenas. Feel for Eddie Jordan and Gilbert. A devastating blow.

Caller Chris. More on defense. Is it a hustle issue or more technical? Not effort except for a couple on big guys. Mostly technical. Depends on the offensive players involved and their skills. Chris Bosh presented unique challenges because we didn't show hard when we were supposed to on perimeter and then the big didn't recover and get back in the middle enough times. he said generally we're pretty good on pick and roll but last night the breakdowns were really, really obvious. Said Bosh, Ford were part of the reason. He said Keyon was really able to get up under T.J. to give him a hard time. About all the 3s.....sometimes a guy has a hot hand that night. Wasn't going to leave Anthony Parker to rush after Joey Graham. He hit a couple shots and got hot, when normally he doesn't hit that high a percentage.

practice today. worked on individual offensive moves. no work on defense. no contact. Expects to go 5-on-5 tomorrow and work on execution. Will work on some of Memphis' plays. At this time of year, try to limit contact at practice.

Dennis asked about Darko's DQ. Hill said Darko was upset about no-call on Bosh's foul on other end and causing turnover and then Darko getting called for a foul on Bosh on other end for same thing. Why don't they call the foul on the other end? Hill tried to explain that he's just not going to get the calls that Bosh is because the officials see Bosh as all-star. He said it shouldn't be that way but it is as far as the refs are concerned -- at least for now for Darko. But he didn't think that was excuse for Darko to go off. He said they really needed him to show a little more restraint and it was a factor for the Magic at the end of the game that they didn't have him to contest shots. Said it would have been nice to have Darko to help guard Bosh, too, in addition to Battie and Trevor.

End of second segment

quote:
Segment 3:

Next coach's show will be day after the end of the regular season (April 19).

Didn't think it would have been good move for Donovan to go to Grizzlies from Florida.

Dave questions....Said it's not Brian's fault. He says if the players aren't listening, that't not coach's fault and the players need to be professionals. Says people are down on Jameer but he still seems to be steal at where he was drafted.

Hill says he doesn't think anyone is tuning him out. There is give-and-take input going on at practices and they're very into it. he says everyone is accountable. He says his biggest frustration is on offensive end, specifically turnovers, careless fastbreaks, passes out of post, 3 second violations, traveling. He says the Magic just need to grow up. They're a little too inexperienced and a little too young. They are experiencing a lot of things for the first time and are going through growing pains. Dwight with the extra attention and double teams. Darko playing bigger minutes in 82 games. Jameer starting at point for the first time. Trevor having such a key role. He says he loves all the players and there isn't anything he wouldn't do for any of them but that this is just something they need to go through.

Did some good things offensively last night. Got shots they expected to get, and sometimes that's the difference. he said sometimes they hurry shots or force shots but they are getting much better at that. he said it's mostly the turnovers that kill them.

He said Boston and Minnesota are the losses that kill him, that it really changed the mindset for the stretch run.

Do you notice difference when Hedo is making shots? Coach says a lot is mental and depends on what kind of start he gets. Might press if he struggles at start. Last night he got a couple right off bat and went to him a lot and he had it going so you try to ride it as long as you can while he does.

End third segment

quote:
Last Segment:

Someone named David called. Said he expected them to be a .500 team and that he would consider it an improvement. But then they got off to a 13-4 start and he got excited. He asked if it will it be considered improvement this season if team finishes under .500 but makes playoffs ane if it bothers him when people say he is not the right guy to coach this team? (That was a brave caller.) Hill says everyone on outside will have own ideas on that, and media helps set that. Immediate goal is to get team to playoffs. Won't be happy if team finishes under .500. Won't be happy if they miss playoffs. Thinks making playoffs is most important thing right now for their development because Dwight and the other youngsters need to experience it. Can't explain it but it's different, and only by getting there can they experience how.

Firmly believes he is right coach for Magic and can take them to a much higher level next year. Always will be scuttlebutt when you're not meeting others' expectations as part of NBA. Yes, it bothers him when people say he isn't the right guy for the job, but he doesn't let it affect his job and tries not to let it affect the other parts of his life. But he thinks he's the right man for the job. He's not concerned about job security. He believes he will be back and that he can help the team experience a much better season next year.

Talked about next game. Says Grizzlies are a scary team. They have high scoring games and are not getting blown out and they are forcing other teams to play at high tempo. He says because of their record, sometimes opponents might think it will be a cakewalk and then they'll run it right at you and you can't stop them once they get started.

End of show

Hope you all enjoyed the show =)

obviously, we lost to a Pau Gasol-less "Girlies" team.

Everytime I hear B Hill talk or read something that he has said I get more frustrated with his antics. He shouldn't be calling Darko out for finally showing some emotion when he was ejected. Yes, Darko could have helped guard Bosh, but Darko has been screwed by the refs all season and finally let them hear it. Good for him.

Brian also shouldn't constantly demomstrate how superior he is, and how he isn't subject to justifiable criticism from the know-nothing fans and media.

He also shouldn't continue to make excuses for our young players, especially when Grant, Battie, Dooling and Arroyo (for most of the season) are getting a heap of minutes.

Flat out, B Hill is not the guy for the job and he is the only one that thinks otherwise. This Summer we will once again witness his dismissal.

Good ridance Napolean!

Absolutely agree with this. I don't agree with some of Brian's substitutions (or, better: when he substitutes), but Brian's also an NBA coach and I'm not. It's real easy to sit back and judge, but he might have his reasons for doing what he does - morale for young players (those who are starting, at least), trying to teach leadership (letting a guy fail every once in a while - Jackson does this a lot), and so on.

I've said before that I don't know if Brian's right for this team or not, but I know what happened to this team last time we punted him for greener pastures.

We didn't decline because Brian was gone.

We declined because Shaq was gone.

Shaq was a large part of the decline, but Penny and the boys, Horace, DScott and Nick maintained 2 50+ years. It was talent, not BHill!!!
