The Solution

Knicks' Thomas wanted Rashard Lewis, got Randolph

Recommended Posts

First off Marc, GWallace was unrestricted.

Second, yes it's all speculation. But, knowing that Shard targeted Orlando as his number one option, I think diminishes the risk of attaining Shard at a lesser offer.

Now if there was bonafide, confirmed report floating out there that NY, Clev, Hou offered Shard 118 million in a sign and trade which made it necessary for Otis to counter, then fine.

But what we know is that NY, Clev, & Hou were all trying to dump undesirable players and even more undesirable contracts. What we also know is that Shard verbally agreed to a 5 year contract worth substantially less.

The only other thing we ca confirm for certain is that other teams had interest. And as I already said, of course they did. But that doesn't mean that they would be able to swing a deal.

Therefore, IMO, Otis panicked and was cornered into overpaying by 30 milion. That's fine this year, and probably next year too. But as all these contracts continue to escalate, Otis will once again find himself in a familiar place...cornered.

you guys are silly

say we 'miss out' on Rashard because some other idiot GM offers him a max deal

the reaction on this board would be everyone saying thank god we didn't blow that much money on a fringe allstar

then we'd look forward to the 2008 free agent class, being called the best OF ALL TIME, with 50 million dollars to spend in free agency for two max players (if we decided to let Jameer go, which we should have)

even if we re-signed Jameer, and with Dwight's extension, we still would have been 20 million under the cap with Arroyo, Dooling, and Garrity expiring

silly arguments being made

we coulda put Arenas and Dwight together (or Dwight and the other 20 free agents better than Rashard this offseason)

Just to illusrate, say we 'missed out on Rashard': now that we know Jameer's contract, we can see our cap situation for the 2008 free agent class (the one being hailed as the BEST EVER)

http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries/orlando.htm

Dwight - 13 million

Hedo - 6.8

Battie - 5.7

Nelson - 5.5 (first year salary according to hoopshype)

Bogans - 2.9

Ariza - 2.9 (he will not opt out given how little minutes he's getting, or will be traded)

Redick 2.1

Foyle - 1.2

TOTAL SALARY 2008 summer - 40.1 million

Estimated 2008 salary cap - 59.8 million

That is 19.7 million in cap space even WITH jameer and dwight's extensions (and ariza on board), in the best free agent class ever

so why did we have to gamble on Rashard being offered a max from New York?

let's take it a step farther: say we had let Jameer Nelson go, we woulda had 25 million to work with

given annual max raises, you could offer TWO semi-max free agents 12.5 million deals that escalate into an average of 16 million: or let JJ Redick go if you want two legit max players

the possibilities were endless

He didn't play hockey.

Every great coach or GM had to start somewhere, without prior qualifications. We don't know yet if Otis is a great GM. But it seems we place too great an emphasis on the financial and cap-related aspects of these deals. It is a factor, to be sure, but ultimately, great GMs should be measured by the success of the teams they assemble.

If this current unit attains playoff success, then Otis will start looking much better.

Here is the 2008 free agent class, we could have had anywhere from 20-25 million to spend on (depending on if we wanted Jameer back, then 20)

Gilbert Arenas

Baron Davis

Allen Iverson

Emeka Okafor

Elton Brand

Luol Deng

Josh Smith

Andre Iguodala

Jermaine O'Neal

Shawn Marion

Ben Gordon

Jose Calderon

Antawn Jamison

Ron Artest

Andris Biedrins

Corey Maggette

Monta Ellis

you have the cap space for a MAX player and another really high priced one

you'd be able to put something together to get a Jose Calderon and Emeka Okafor pretty easily

you could have a, 1-Calderon, 2-Bogans, 3-Hedo, 4-Okafor, 5-Howard

sick..... (or whomever you want to throw in there).

we should have called Rashard's agents bluff, and held firm on the 5-75 million, and if Isiah was stupid enough to offer him 120 million, 2008 was much better anyways

My bad on the FA for Wallace, I could have sworn he was restricted.

Lots factors dimished the risk of not getting him and it is a long shot that Seattle would want anything that any of those teams were offering but as long as there was a 1% chance that is too great a risk for a team that was 1.looking for public support for a new arena 2. needing to resign a guy that if he hits the open market will have EVERY team giving him the keys to the city 3. deparatly needed a guy to score.

No way on Earth is that the reaction. In fact I'll go a step further and say that every sports caster, commentator, former player, league executive, ball boy...etc.. would be eating us alive. I can hear Charles Barkley right now saying "Dwight needs to leave cause that team ain't gonna get him no help." Mitch Kupchack and Kobe would have an entire army of people calling Dwight round the clock.

This is bad bad logic. Otis inherited a team with Dwight Howard on it (chosen by Weisbrod). That is almost like inheriting a team with Shaq.

Even if you totally screw the pooch, you were given the most dominant big man in the NBA for the next decade. Dwight Howard alone guarantees you a high level of success.

Now when you look at how Hedo is playing for a reasonable contract (also was here before Otis was GM), you see how little he did with any success we may have. I'm not a Jameer Nelson fan, but that was also a Weisbrod trade.

Otis has spend his entire wad on one player in Rashard Lewis and blown three lottery picks (Fran, JJ, and wasted pick for Darko who was let go). Ariza isn't even getting minutes. He signed Foyle and Gortat too I guess :/. He also gave Battie a maddeningly huge extension when we needed the money for Darko.

Fact is, if you were given the Orlando Magic with a 19 year old Dwight Howard and Hedo signed to an MLE on it, with Francis/Hill set to expire eventually, a homeless idiot could have done a better job than getting nothing out of 3 lottery picks and giving Kobe money to Rashard.
