Does it ever happen that someone who is bad on defense for one team suddenly becomes a good/average defender on another team ? Would  you say if someone is a good defender they will have good defensive stats even on a bad team?

Defense is largely built on effort. Especially for those who fit the physical requirements at their position. Coaching and defensive IQ are the other two facets that may affect a defender. 

Not having the ability to understand a defensive scheme is the single worst detriment a player can have because no matter how good the coach or how much ability they have they may never develop a strong enough understanding to reach their potential. I think a lot of that comes at a young age for players that weren't held accountable for their defensive lapses. 

Too add it isn't impossible to hide a bad defender if they are surrounded by good defenders.

Is it Elfrid Payton syndrome? He had such a competitive streak at Bama but maybe he can't flip that switch enough.
