Trade Details to stop the negativity

Recommended Posts

Opportunity cost and comparative analysis. Trade details only make the Magic look worse in the trade... I like that we didn't take on a max contract and that we acquired a draftee from this year's draft, but that explain failing to unload more money.

Plus anyways what good will a trade exception do for the Magic? Other than hopefully trade for a fat contract with 1-2 years left in order to acquire more draft picks.

completely agree.

What is being overlooked is that in 2014 the Magic will be able to offer 2 max contracts if they choose to.

Exactly, so, (assuming we are as bad as I think we will be) by the start of the 2014/2015 season the Magic could have 2 top 10 prospects, have locked up one or two of their young guys now (who impressed) to more long term contracts and a potential max contract player... Assuming we don't throw a max contract at someone undeserving like some teams do I think things are looking very good.

Everyone should consider the business side of this trade as well. No way Devos signs off on a plan of paying top dollar for a mediocre, playoff pergatory product.

Unless LeBron gets tired of Miami (which he might if Wade's body continues to break down) I don't like 2014 much for free agents. Most of the other big names are really old (Dirk, Kobe, Wade, Pierce) and others I don't think are all that great (Rudy Gay). 2015 is more interesting with Kevin Love and LaMarcus Aldridge.

Isn't Rondo set to be a free agent in one of those years also?

Of course. That's the entire reason we got Denver involved. We didn't want Iguodala.

Chad Ford's Updated Off-Season Team Grade for the Magic:

It's difficult to find anything positive to say about the Magic's summer. They lost one of the five best players in the league and got pennies on the dollar in return. They fired one of the best veteran head coaches in the league, brought in a rookie GM and rookie coach and are now left with a roster that could be one of the worst in the NBA.Losing Howard was inevitable, and everyone knew that they weren't getting back equal value in return; the longer this went on -- and it dragged on far too long -- the more it became clear that Orlando's options were disappearing fast.

But what the Magic are left with is still shocking. Their prize is Afflalo, a 26-year-old defensive specialist who didn't play a whole lot of defense last season. They did get a couple of solid prospects in Harkless and Vucevic. But the draft picks they received? All lottery-protected. What makes this harder to swallow is that it's now clear that the Magic actually passed on a better offer from the Nets in February (Otis Smith's fault, not Hennigan's) and probably a better offer from the Rockets this summer (better young prospects, better picks, more salary cap relief).

To compound things, the Magic let free agent Ryan Anderson walk and, thanks to some overeagerness at the start of the summer, are also on the hook for a minimum of two years and $19 million for Nelson. On top of that, they still owe Glen Davis $25 million and that Hedo Turkoglu deal will cost them a minimum of $17 million if they buy him out at the end of next season.

So what's the positive? They will have cap space next summer. Significant cap space. And they will have at least one great draft pick (their own) next year. However, next year's free-agent class is looking pretty weak. And the 2013 draft? It might be one of the worst in recent memory. If the cavalry is coming, they are years and years away.

At the media conference, GM Rob Henningan talked about having patience to rebuild. I think he meant the patience of Job.

GRADE: F

The negativity is just being realistic.

Sadly.....

While a lot of what Ford said was true, he neglected to mention that we now have the flexibility to do whatever we want in the future. We unloaded JRich, Clark, and Duhon's contracts and got back tradable assets in return. This new regime in management isn't about making splashy moves, it's about making moves that set us up for success in the long term.

It was a great trade for the Magic. Vucevic and Harkless are both very promising players with great potential. Affalo is a very solid, established player on good contract, we can always trade him or keep him if we develop fast. Harrington will be traded soon. We also have lots of picks and does not matter how high or low they are...we are going to have our own picks as well, we'll be able to unload more contracts with those draft picks, or keep them...And I do not expect us to suck for 5-6 years as some posters and "experts" are saying...Maximum 2 seasons and still we are going to have a young and exciting team, it will be fun to watch them grow together. I hope our youngsters will be playing a lot next year, I expect Vucevic, Nickolson and later in the season Harkless to start and play 30-32 minutes a game. I hate the word "tanking", so I just want us to play young players more, let them get this experience...

Everyone is complaining that Rockets and Nets packages were better but it is simply stupid...we'll never know what Rockets were really offering and why everyone is so excited about their picks??? because they were great in summer league??? come on...Nets offer was terrible, max contract to Lopez???

once again, it was a good trade for us...good offseason...my only problem is Jameer Nelson's deal...but even that is ok...because both Hedo and Nelson could be cut in two seasons...

I do not understand why all these experts complain about Big Baby's contract...he is a decent PF-C on a good contract...hope we keep him...
