What Vince Carter Can Do

Recommended Posts

If you're an Orlando Magic fan who's down on Vince Carter, I can't say that I blame you. Your lasting memory of him in a Magic uniform, to date, is likely his missing two clutch free throws in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Boston Celtics; had he sank them, the Magic would have trailed by a single point with 34.7 seconds remaining. Instead, they had to make an incredible defensive stand just to save their season--a stand they ultimately made--but they fell short. Two games later, with the Magic facing elimination, he scored 3 points on 1-of-9 shooting, and found himself benched in Matt Barnes' favor for 2:16 of the fourth quarter in a tight game which Orlando wound up winning. And overall, Carter didn't make a huge postseason impact, scoring 15.5 points per game on 50.6% True Shooting. Again, I can't blame you if you aren't impressed.

But at the same time, I feel like we might have lost sight of the good Carter can do for the Magic. Coach Stan Van Gundy's offense requires a versatile, playmaking wing to function best, a role which Dwyane Wade filled during Van Gundy's tenure with the Heat, and which Hedo Turkoglu took on during Van Gundy's first two years patrolling the Magic's sideline. Pick-and-roll proficiency; jump-shooting off the dribble and off the catch; and the ability to create for oneself and for one's teammates are, in no particular order, the specific tasks this wing needs to perform. Carter? He has demonstrated he can fit the bill, even in his seemingly mediocre first year with the Magic.

To get an idea of where Carter stands relative to other players of his approximate position and role, I turned to Synergy Sports Technology and HoopData.com. The results indicate a player whose best days are clearly behind him, but also one lethal enough offensively to inflict serious damage in a variety of situations.

Well Vince couldnt do much worse. I think he will greatly benefit from another year in this system.

From personal experience, things have to hit rock bottom for you to come out on top. This counts for everything in life, including basketball. Vince has done so much good throughout his existence, I have a feeling some higher power will give him some luck this season. The misery that is Vince Carters play, shouldnt last too long. If he really works hard this offseason it should pay off big time. My hope is...we all are shocked of how fit and ready to play VC is when preseason starts.

Well it's no surprise really how everyone has turned Vince into the main scapegoat. He is the big new player on the team that had the year before gotten to the NBA finals. Factor in his problems in Toronto, and no matter what good will (and maturing) he did in New Jersey and people will be ready to point the blame immediately on him. He did not help his case by looking average for most of the playoffs and only showing up in 2 games of the Boston series, and his good play during the season was offset by his horrible month in February.

All that being said, the fact that he has become so heavily blamed just shows me how bad most central florida sports fans are. When I hear "Magic fans" shout out things like, "we would have won with Turk and Lee", or "Vince is the whole reason we lost" and put no accountability on the rest of the team at all it really burns me up big time. The Boston series is at the fault of the entire Magic team and no one player gets more or less of the blame. The bench was a no show, SVG made some bad decisions, Howard was mentally out of it until the last 3 games, Jameer was an all star one moment and a 12th man the next, Rashard contributed nothing on the offensive end (flu or no flu), and our defensive stopper Barnes got absolutely toasted by Pierce every time they matched up. To put the blame on one man is really just pathetic.

Vince did well for us in the regular season. He looked a little lost in the Celtic series, but their defense was good - it got them to seven games against LA. I wish VC were the type of player that could dominate games, but he isn't.

Still on the fence: I'm hoping he starts out stronger and finishes stronger next season.
