Update from Magical

Recommended Posts

Hello, fellows!

Update this morning which gives a feeling for how many options the Magic have:

Yes, Joe Johnson is still in play. Atlanta is fed up with Josh Smith and want to move Horford to PF, so they may be interested in Gortat in a Joe sign and trade. But this is within the division, so who knows how willing ATL will be to deal with us.

Rudy Gay is also a possibility, but the Magic don't think he deserves a max contract - closer to 6-9 million per year. If Memphis decides to sign and trade him (they've said they'll match any offer - doubtful) we will be in the fold. However, if a team like the Nets offer him a max or anywhere near it, we're out. Interestingly, this seems to be Otis's favorite option because it would be a tweak as opposed to an overhaul. Just add Gay in at SF and draft Gortat's replacement. (Yes, it seems we would keep Vince in this scenario - and Rashard would stay largely at the 4).

Otis will float Gortat to move up in the draft. Apparently Otis does this almost every year - offers up 1 or 2 players for top picks in the draft. He offered Hedo the year OJ Mayo came out (3 years ago?). Apparently they are very enamored with Wesley Johnson and feel he is exactly what we need at SF.

In terms of bigs, they like the Amar'e idea and will push for this. Apparently Bosh is also an option, but all indications are that he'll ride LeBron's coattails wherever he goes.

Otis has received clearance to use the TPE if it helps bring in a star.

The feeling is that if we can get someone to bite on a package of Vince + some combination of Gortat/Pietrus/Bass/Anderson, we'll add a star, and then go young with our bench. If you don't see Gortat traded at the draft, look for him to be shopped hard when free agency starts up. Unlikely that he'll be here next year.

It is likely going to come down to choosing between JJ and Barnes. The guess is that JJ has the advantage because of his history with the team, but Barnes could be cheaper - though we don't have his Bird Rights. We'll try again to get CJ, offering him around 2.5 million.

The TPE is worth around 6.8 million.

Apparently Joe and Bosh are complete longshots now, but will still be investigated. The team thought they had a legit shot at these guys, but then Vince crapped the bed and dropped his value from "solid player" to "expiring contract."

Also, Conley would likely be included in a Gay sign and trade.

If we keep Gortat, it will be the biggest mistake this franchise has made in recent history. To have all that money tied up to a backup center is ridiculous. When that backup center is playing behind the best center in the league, it becomes even harder to comprehend.

You don't need Joe Johnson backing up Kobe Bryant is what I'm saying.

Rev, what would be offered by us in a s-n-t for Gay and Conley?

Hmmm the Joe Montana / Steve Young example works against your theory

Gortat and Pietrus/Bass/Anderson?

They have Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph, so I don't know what interest they'd have in Gortat, but that is who he said would be offered.
