Actually they can offer an average of 10m/yr. Gortat is an "Early Bird" free agent. That means that teams can sign him for the mid-level, worth 5.6m the first year, and then the second, third, etc., years can be 10m per season if they wish.

 

A couple of things about that however. First, if the Magic match, they match the MLE without the crazy raise after the second or third year. Second, he would count against the Maverick cap as the average of the entire contract length.

 

So let's say he is offered the following 5 year deal: 5.6m, 10m, 10m, 10m, 10m

 

The average of that contract is 9.12m, and that is what Dallas would be charged cap wise even in the first year.

If you go by what Denton was saying today we will match for Gortat and use him at the 4-5 and wait for the rest to shake out. He said there are more players than money so if you sit and wait some of those guys are going to have to take half the MLE.

He is a major upgrade over Dampier, it would be a great signing for that team.
