christophergentry110401 0 Report post Posted July 13, 2007 Looking to secure a future now tied to Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis, the Orlando Magic will attempt to work out a contract extension with point guard Jameer Nelson this weekend. General Manager Otis Smith will leave today to meet with Steve Mountain, Nelson's agent, in Philadelphia. Smith thinks the club and Nelson can strike a deal, likely trying to extend Nelson for perhaps four years. "We'd like to, sure," Smith said. "He's one of our key pieces with Dwight and Rashard. It just has to be at a number we can agree on." If Nelson doesn't sign before the season, he can become a restricted free agent, although the Magic can match any offer. "We look forward to the meeting and hope we can put something together," Mountain told the Sentinel by phone. Nelson doesn't have leverage on his side, coming off what Smith called a "subpar" season. But he likely will ask for a contract somewhere between the four-year deal for $24 million given to Seattle point guard Luke Ridnour and the five-year deal for $47.5 million handed to Chicago point guard Kirk Hinrich. A deal with Nelson will push the Magic over the salary cap, although they could try to trade players to create room. http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/orl-mjameer1307jul13,0,7520525.story

magicdepth 0 Report post Posted July 13, 2007 Otis likes to over pay guys and spend lots of money! I say Jameer would get a 4 year 32 Mil deal with a 5th year team option for 10 mil
Knappy 0 Report post Posted July 13, 2007 I say 4 year $28 to $30 m or 5 year for $35 to $38 m.

vic110 0 Report post Posted July 13, 2007 Otis is smart. If he waits then Jameer's agent will ask for more money. Do it know where he can get less money because of the season he had last year. If we go over the cap now can we use our mid-level contract?

I cant see why he deserves anything more than Ridnour numbers.... They both play piss poor D, usually get around 12-15 per game game Ridnour actually avgs more assts. and less turnovers.... all that in less playing time! Lets not get crazy here, even Otis has dubbed Nelsons past performance as Sub-Par.... We are basically giving JN, the type of money we said Darko wasnt worth? Is this a joke? Nelsons game isnt even proven, its all upside, potential, the same problem many of us had around here with Darko and the money. If Otis signs Jameer any where much over Ridnour type dollars, it will just be another instance of mis-management. But WTH, lets try to slip this snaffu past the media while they are still laughing at us for the Shard contract. Jameer = 6 / 7 mil per AT MOST, and that is grossly overpaying for what we have gotten previously from him. Thats a gamble, based on speculation and upside. Most around here base their arguements on "lets see what he can do" " or "he should play better under SVG, wait and see" or "his game comes cheap and we can still see what he brings".... You guys and Otis better be right... because we are not waiting to see what he can do, we are placing our future in his hands, his unproven, turnover prone, poor decision making, bad defensive, hands. Unless SVG can change EVERY aspect of Jameers game, the money we are about to fork over will not be worth it.
You're Fat, Pat! 98 Report post Posted July 13, 2007 because Otis (as do i, and alot of Magic fans) believe Meer-Meer will have a breakout season...and if we waited to sign him, hed be askin for some serious ca-ching-ching... but at the same time...this is a risk...cuz he may not be all he's cracked up to be... but we'll see... MilitaryMagic 0 Report post Posted July 13, 2007 One huge difference between Jameer and Ridnour - Jameer can drop 30 on any given night. 'Nuff said. Give him 7 mil a year and keep everyone (i.e. DWIGHT) happy.

Id take consistency at the point, over an up and down, poor / good rollercoaster - droppin 30 a night still averages in to their per game total.... that just points out a another negative for Jameer vs. Ridnour and BTW... JN put up 30 once last year (31)... so did Ridnour: 1, 30 plus game (32) nuff said
ibonedteribell 0 Report post Posted July 13, 2007 This is a no win situation for Otis since he brought him over against most experts predictions of NBA performance and he really believes in him to do the job. If he gives in to a lucrative extension for him he may go over the salary cap and his standing with the Brass will be unstable if Jameer doesnt get the job done, if he gives him a year and free agency at a reasonable salary he is in risk of distressing many fans and specially Howard and admitting he was probably wrong, which is one of Otis less noticeable qualities. I think he will not stick his head out on this one, even for Howard, for he has already been signed for 5 years.
