This is why we need a GM that can analyze talent, get a good scouting staff, and draft.

This is the ugliest 22 year draft history I have ever seen. Roughly 28 picks and more busts and no names than you can shake a stick at. We had 3 number one picks. The Shaq one was a no brainer. An elementary school kid could make that pick. The second you couldnt go wrong with Webber or Penny. The last was probably the best decision a GM made in our history choosing Howard over Okafor. Nick Anderson, Dennis Scott, Mike Miller, Nelson, Redick, and C Lee turned out to be productive picks that contributed. On the fringe with great seasons with Orlando is Doleac, Harpring, and Dooling. So we had 9 out of 28 good picks in 22 years at best or about 32% success rate. We ended up dumping Miller, C Lee and Harprin for other pieces for what that was worth. We also had two second rounders that we actually hit a homerun on in Anderson Varejo and Zaza Pachulia. One never wore a magic uniform and the other was traded away because some guy Mario Kasun was supposed to be the next best thing.

If you go back and look at the history, we had multiple picks in bad draft class years and no or late round picks in the better draft years. Since we got D12 7 years ago, we only have JJ and C Lee to show on our draft board. There arguably strong draft classes during these times; however, we tried to take a different route by not building through the draft but through trades for veteran free agents. I can't blame the franchise for trying that with the draft history we have shown. However, when you give away all your draft picks and then overpay for free agents and then trade them away to take even worse free agents, you simply end up where we are today. You lose on every end and have your second or third best pick in franchise history ready to get the hell out of dodge. What an embarassing mess and we havent even gotten into the Fran Vazquez fiasco yet.

Hopefully our new GM will realize that this is a strong draft class this year and will break this ugly draft history cycle that all his predecessors have left.

You can't really blame any one person for 22 years worth of drafting history. The most we can look at is the drafts that Otis was a part of. In those drafts he selected JJ and Lee and had a part in drafting Dwight and Jameer. The obvious failure was Vasquez. I refuse to think of Orton as anything other than a glorified second round pick with a guaranteed contract. Overall, that's not bad drafting. Otis' major failures were his financial management of the roster and his horrific trades that put us in a much worse position.

Now, if you want to get into whether or not we should have traded so many first round picks that is a different discussion. We definitely made the right decision trading a pick for Alston. The one we traded to Phoenix made a horrible trade even more cringe-worthy. I can't remember why we traded the other pick.

It should also be pointed out that most of those bad picks were in the mid-90s when this team was really good and consequently picking towards the end of the first round and the Doc Rivers era that led to several years of horrific drafting. The early drafts by the the Magic were exceptional and drafts after Dwight weren't bad either.
