Has SVG failed the Magic? OR Management? OR players?

Recommended Posts

SVG is a very stubborn person and that affects his coaching. 3 times his team was beaten by a stronger, tougher, taller teams. First it was Detroit Pistons, then L.A. Lakers and last season Boston Celtics. They all were doing the same thing. Single cover for Dwight for most of the games and closing out on shooters. He never learned a lesson, he started this season again with Rashard at PF and only now we finally have a true PF alongside Howard, still undersized though...

Another problem is our offense, for whatever reason SVG thinks that the best strategy is to surround Howard with shooters and shoot almost 30 threes a game. You never win a championship playing like that, it never happened in NBA history...I was always thinking that Otis is a good GM because he could get rid off Steve Francis contract, but he had a few terrible trades/decisions. Cook/Evans trade for Ariza was a huge mistake. Drafting Fran Vasquez another one. Signing Lewis to max deal, when nobody in the league could offer him so much money. And looks like the latest trade for Arenas was not successful as well, he has more years, money on the deal and brings absolutely nothing right now. Lewis could be used off the bench with the same or even more success than Gilbert right now. And if J.Richardson won't be resigned then trade with the Suns won't be that good as well, by the way we can lose promising Clark from that trade as well.

of course people can say we are competing right now, going deep in playoffs, 50 season wins and ect. but we have a second highest payroll in the league, one of the most dominant big man in the basketball world, so we have to win a championship, we just can't be happy with some playoff success anymore...

The Rockets won TWO championships in the 90s with that strategy.

Like I said, if we had a perimeter scorer who could take over games on his own we wouldn't need the spacing system on offense, but we don't.

It's absurd how some of you act like the Magic have compiled the greatest roster in NBA history and it's a travesty that we haven't won a title yet.

I agree with this mostly. I don't know what goes on behind closed doors. I'm not expecting him to hype anyone up and I tried to state that in my original post about speechs. I just prefer not to say anything then to say its just 1 of 82. I stand behind Stan as our coach though. I think people fail to realize how well he develop players and how good he really is.

You really need to understand a thing or two about how the media works.. Do you really trust 100% of what everyone says in front of reporters?

And if he didn't say anything, that would be worse.

There is obviously a particular way to talk to the media. Just watch other team interviews.

That comes with only reading and watching one type of team!

lol. I know how the media works.

Your right. Saying nothing would be worse. I just haven't liked how we have started games and the comment just irked me.

The Rockets won TWO championships in the 90s with that strategy.

Houston also had Otis Thorpe & Robert Horry playing the 3 & 4 positions next to Olyjawon. Two long, athletic players who could defend & rebound. Along with players like Mad Max, Ellie, & Drexler who could create and defend on the perimeter. They weren't nearly as one dimensional as Orlando, neither was/is San Antiono.

I agree with OP opinion of Orlando's Finals run through Boston, but I do think you're overstating it. I also think the injuries to Tony Allen & Leon Powe are overshadowed/overlooked because KG was out.

At the end of the day, I think the question Otis & SVG have to answer to is one of philosophical direction, not specific personnel decisions. Each has stated their philosophy is one of taking offensive players and challenging them to a high defensive standard. That offense first philosophy isn't one I've seen win a title, but they still have an opportunity to succeed where Sacramento & Pheonix fell short. The recent trades represent a doubling-down on this line and I find that curious when the public rational for inspiring a massive in-season change was that the team had fallen apart defensively. Otis & SVG have each done a respectable job, the jury is still out, and they deserve the benefit of the doubt because I assume this current roster isn't rounded out. But, if Dwight ends his career in Orlando w/o a title, it will be their failure to put the appropriate players around him imo.

Sorry for being a fan.....?

We have had the oppurtunity the past 2 seasons and we didn't get it done. If you want to accept that our team was incapable of winning championships then that is your own opinion. I personally, like to believe that we were capable of winning a championship the past 2 seasons. For whatever reason, it didn't happen. Someone has to be at fault.

Also, you didn't answer my question earlier regarding Doc Rivers.

Im not gonna sit here and say that the Season is Over and that we don't have a chance. But like a lot of you have said we have a lot of problems on this team that need to be fixed.

First off SVG is a really good coach and I do believe that he has improved the Team from where it was. But If a Team keeps losing close games and the same excuse everytime is that they're not playing hard enough and need to improve their energy for all 48 Minutes then face it people that is a real problem. A coach is supposed to bring the most out of his players. It's like any Job if you Respect your Boss, Like your Boss, and Trust your Boss with the Direction that they're leading you then you'll want to Work as hard as you can to gain they're approval and Make them look Great. That is just not happening so there must be some kind of disconnect behind the scenes.

Second Our defense is horrible because SVG wants the Players to play Team Defense all game. He needs to put some more responsibility on the wing defenders to play good 1 on 1 defense. I don't care how much someone sucks (You're in the NBA) Step up your game and make a play. To be a decent defender all you need is Effort and a little Heart. This team plays Lazy on D because they know that if they're man gets past them then someone is gonna be right there to pick up their man. Great concept but what this does is always leaves someone wide open for a jump shot.

Third problem is Dwight. (Before you break your computer hear me out)

Because we have such a Dominant Center all of our other players play Soft. When J-Rich was with Phoenix he drove the ball to the Rim half the time. Since he has been with the Magic I think I've seen him dunk Once. Look at Carter, Arenas, Turk, Pietrus etc. Something about playing with Dwight turns every player we have into strictly a jump shot specialists. Im not blaming Van Gundy or Management on this one. Just because the team is set up with 1 Big Man and a bunch of good jump shooters doesn't mean that SVG'S gonna bench a player if he takes it to the Rim for a Dunk, Easy lay up, or a Foul. Dwight can't fix these but his presence is what causes it.

Not saying lets get rid of him or nothing like that (Calm Down)

Bottom line We need more Heart. Call me Crazy but I would much rather watch a team that looks like they're busting they're A** every single night win or lose than have a team that can win a Championship but doesn't have the Fire to get it done.

Coaching - Dude, don't even go there. SVG is a wonderful coach. I'm sure he says everything he can, screams, *****es, and curses to get these guys motivated and hyped up to take the *****ing game and grow a pair. It's not his fault they don't.

Really? Don't even go there? This statement really baffles me. Why?

Guess what, let me inform you about SVG as our coach and what he does behind closed doors.

Nobody on this message board knows what goes on behind closed doors, at practices, player meetings, etc.

So, for you to say that he is doing "everything" he possibly can is quite a blind statement considering you really do not know what is actually going on.

What I can say about SVG as our coach is that he has made some errors IN-game. Multiple times in key playoff series and important games. I can absolutely go there....because I have seen it.
