Bob Vander Weide: Expect to see more Brandon Bass next season

Recommended Posts

I dont like all that much of Bass I dont think he is that good of a fir for us

Agreed...I don't get it about Bass. Just because he has muscles and throws down a powerful dunk here or there doesn't make him a "bruiser" PF. He can't rebound, he doesn't really play defense, and gives up size all the while ruining the offensive system that works so well for us. He was a mistake by Otis, if you want a real "bruiser" PF then get someone who will rebound and play defense off the bench.

If we keep Bass, he should continue sitting on the bench where he belongs.

And here is what I dont get....

After losing to the Lakers, the need for a bigger PF was essential going into that offseason....

We signed Bass and Matched Gortat to fill that need at PF....

2010 Season Starts and we stick with our "2009 Rotation" and never see Bass or Gortat come off the bench to fill the "Bigger PF Need"....

The only time we actually use the "Bigger PF" was in the late round of the playoffs, where it was obvious that more time with the "Bigger Lineup" was definitely needed.... preferably before the playoffs...

The end result of 2010 Playoffs... We get bounce by Boston... and the need for a "Bigger PF" is back on....

Reflecting on the season, SVG admitted that he should of used Gortat and Bass more in the season, ironing out the details of using that particular lineup.... Amazing...

Just think, if we did use Bass and Gortat in the PF position... we would have a better idea if we have the right players or not for what we are looking for.... Which could of put us in more of a drive to find that player....

But no....

Now we are back to square one...

Back to the fact that Bass and Gortat will once again put on the PF suit and go to work... And that put's us fans back in the spectator seet, watching and waiting to see if its going to work or not...

KITNO, you don't need to plus one stuff anymore, just hit the pos or neg sign in the bottom right of a post, hopefully it will cut down on the spammers who do it all the time (I know you're not one of them) :D

I wonder how many minutes with RA play then? If Bass will be playing more minutes at the 4 there is no room for RA unless there is an injury.

RA may be used as a trade asset. He is young and has potential to grow. Many teams in the NBA value bigs who can shoot the long-ball, and Anderson does it with ease. The guy is also a terrific rebounder, both offensively and defensively...SVG even said that is why he got playing time over Bass in certain situations.

Anyway, I am happy that Bass is going to get more PT next season. We're paying him mid-level money and we'll see if he is a FA acquisition that we can be proud of, or if he was just a waste of cap. I think he needed a year to get used to Gundy's system and I'm sure he's going to work this offseason. He's got a year on our team under his belt and I can smell improvement for next season.

Seems clear that if they aren't going to trade Bass this offseason, then they definitely need to make use of him more this coming season. I'm not ready to blame our loss to Boston on Bass's lack of familiarity in our system (or his teammates' lack of familiarity with him). But his size and physical play are assets.

Oh, and speaking of assets...from a cynical standpoint, shouldn't they play Bass more if they DO plan on trading him before the deadline? :D

Could just be a smokescreen. Moving Bass to the 4 still leaves someone out of the rotation. I've said it before and I'll say it again, we have too much depth.

One of these guys will either get little to no playing time at all.

Redick, Pietrus, Q-Rich, Bass, Anderson, Gortat

You can't possibly play all of them.

If we were to start Lewis at SF, my rotation would look like this:

Nelson / Duhon / FA

VC / Redick / Pietrus

Lewis / Richardson / Pietrus / VC

Bass / Gortat / Anderson

Howard / Gortat

I thought about starting Gortat at PF, but he needs to sub in for Dwight. He can play some minutes at the 4, but the main focus from a coaching standpoint would be to remain productive while Dwight is out of the game. Gortat is the only center we have at the moment that would be most effective to replace our star.

If we do go down this route, Pietrus and Anderson are on the losing end of the battle. Pietrus could be used as a defensive specialist against the elite guards/small forwards we face, but we are packing heat at the SF and SG positions so his PT will have to suffer. He was a spark offensively as well last year, but I don't think we're paying Redick more than 5 million a year for him to be used sparingly. I feel bad for Air France. Anderson has a shot at PT if he shows that he can produce more than Bass, but I see him as a bench player with little time next season.

So we'd be paying Pietrus over 5 million a year to be a situational defender? Doesn't make sense to me. I agree JJ should be getting alot of minutes with that contract (heck, I think he should be starting and VC shipped for a legit stud at the 3 or 4).

Like I said, it's a logjam no matter how you slice it.

I forgot that Pietrus had such a taxing contract. Wow, we have a huge payroll. And yes it is a logjam, I remember Otis saying that Q-Rich had the capability to start at his press conference. I agree on Carter as well, we have a surplus of wingmen and he could land us some solid talent.

Bass needs to earn his minutes, period. If he proves he can be a contributor on the floor I'd be happy to see him out there. Blowing rotations for another year just isn't gonna get it done.

As long as we play the system we do... Bass will not fit.
