Is Dwight just another modern day athlete?

Recommended Posts

IMO Dwight is still very much an immature kid, who is being overwhelmed and tempted with the superstar lifestyle. From the baby, to the porn star story, to the rumor that he has another kid with some trick in ATL.

Personally, I've never looked at Dwight as the role model type. He's always been way too immature, and in his defense he's only 24.

I was absolutely crushed learning about Tiger, because I looked up to him on so many levels, and I have personally interacted with him on several occasions.

In addition, I also think Christians in the spotlight tend to have huge targets on their backs in the court of public opinion and the media, fairly or not. For some reason, many people think that Christian=perfection, when in fact that couldn't be farther from the truth.

Wouldn't we have said the same thing about Tiger 6 years ago though?

Yet he cheats on his wife and it is the lead story on ESPN, ET, etc. for the last 2 weeks.

I think this is an extreme example of Smack's point. How often have youheard Tiger talking about family values?

http://blogs.trb.com/features/..._the_death_of_f.html

That was just prior to his car crash and family issues that ignited this whole scandal. I think he opened himself up to some of this reaction by putting himself out there and talking about things the way he did.

I think Dwight is different. I think he means well, has made some mistakes, but I don't think his transgressions will ever be on the level of what we have seen recently from Tiger.

I did not know Tiger has spent time talking about family values. Any time I hear him speak is it very mundane and to the point so I must have missed it.

I think like most big time athletes, actors, politicians, etc. Tiger thought he was invisible. He could have the hot wife and family and still bang Perkin's waitresses. He would never get caught because he has the world in the palm of his hand.

I agree with what Phil Knight said yesterday that though this may seem huge now it will be a minor blip in Tiger's career when all is said and done.

I can't assume one way or the other here, because Tiger went to great lengths to stay out of the public eye.

I meant both.

I'm sort of with Drain-O here.

Dwight Howard, Tiger Woods, etc, are paid to play a sport. Unless they have a contract that forbids them from having pre-marital sex or extra marital affairs, their choosing to do so is no one's concern but theirs.

As for allegations towards Dwight, at this point they're just allegations. Allegations that, if I recall correctly, Dwight is suing over as slanderous, so accepting them as accurate purely because Dwight is an athlete, and athletes are known to have character issues is unfair to Dwight the person, if not necessarily Dwight the athlete.

This is not a knock on the OP at all as his post was a very well thought out post and probably an interesting topic to most people. However, I personally could care less what sports icons like Dwight and Tiger do on their own time.

The only time it really matters to me is if Dwight did something off the court that affected his game. Thats only because I am a fan of the Orlando Magic and help support the local team by going to games and buying merchandise.

These people are human and are destined to make mistakes just like the rest of us. In some ways I feel sorry for them because their lives are always thrust into the public eye, but I suppose it is the price that must be paid to be a superstar athlete making millions of dollars.

please you got to be pretty naive to not see right away that the whole 'christian' thing was a sales pitch directly related to $pon$or$hip$ and seven zero endorsements...i'm sure D12 is as christian as the rest but that horn was blowing way too hard not to recognize as a marketing campaign...anyhow who cares if he's a model citizen or not - if your looking for celebrities to be role models then its probably time to pay more attention to your family so that they know how to interpret the actions of others because sooner or later they're going to have to interact with the world
