Its Official! Barnes A Magic! [update p.24]

Recommended Posts

I found some info at Orlando Magic Daily...

quote:

As the Orlando Magic continue to stockpile talent in an incredibly eventful offseason, the team has agreed to a two-year deal with free-agent small forward Matt Barnes, Marc Stein is reporting. The dollar amount is unknown at this time.

Most people close to the team expected the Magic to sign Barnes, but that knowledge was wavering as more and more time passed since the Brandon Bass signing almost two weeks ago.

Barnes, at 6-foot-7 and 235 pounds, is a versatile player who can play anywhere from shooting guard to power forward. The Magic have an influx of power forwards, meaning Barnes will likely spend most of his time at small forward and Mickael Pietrus will become the primary backup to Vince Carter. We're getting ahead of ourselves, though.

Barnes, 29, is coming off the best season of his career, posting career-highs of 10.2 points, 2.8 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 27.0 minutes. He started 40 games for the Suns.

He gets most of his points from the outside, taking 75 percent of his shots from outside of the paint. He's a career 33.2 percent 3-point shooter.

UPDATE: C.J. WATSON EXPECTED TO SIGN SOON

The Magic are expected to sign an offer sheet for Watson now that Barnes is locked up. A couple of sources at the Las Vegas summer league said the Magic would do it over the weekend - evidently, the Watson signing was on hold until the Magic could sure up Barnes.

Because Watson is restricted, the Magic would have had their hands tied for a week while the Warriors decided to match or not, and Barnes may have gone elsewhere.

I love this signing and think Barnes is what this team needs. It also tells me what I have been saying all along is that Shard will not start at SF. Barnes will most likely start at the SF(maybe MP) giving us a bench of JJ,MP,Bass,Gortat and possibly Watson. Now that is a championship team. The only thing left is for Dwight to improve offensively and this team is set.
