The Seventh Seal 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 I know it sounds ridiculous, but I think the Orlando Magic are better off with the #2 spot in the East, rather than the 1st. Here's why: it's almost a given that Detroit and Atlanta will have the #4 and #5 spots in the playoffs. Well, after they battle it out the #1 spot will have to go against one of those teams in the semis. We have a notorious history against those teams, even if we are as good as we are now, it would be a tough series to beat any of those teams because of match-up problems. While I believe that we give the Cavs the same type of match up problems, Atlanta and Detroit give us. I also believe we can beat the Cavs in a 7-game series, we have a lot more weapons than they do. This way we can get to the East Finals without going through our regular-season nemesis Atlanta or our playoff nemesis Detroit. Your thoughts?

Kramer 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 Almost a given? Are you kidding me? It's January 1...Things can change pretty quickly. I mean think about the Iverson trade, I don't recal having any confidence that we were the better team until then
Osprey 199 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 Thats actually a pretty good point, Seventh Seal. However, I honestly think it would be great to get the top seed and let the chips fall where they may. If we are number one after the season ends and we STILL can't beat Detroit or Atlanta then we need a coaching change.
Eyriq 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 I agree that Detroit and Atlanta are the favorites for the 4-5 seeds, but that doesn't mean I don't want to play them in the 2cd round. At this point I'd much rather play them than have to face either Boston or Cleveland.

I agree, but at the same I time I can't help but recall the 1-8 matchup between Dallas and Golden State, where Golden State barely made the playoffs yet still upset the Mavs in that series. The Mavs could have probably beaten anyone that year, all except Golden State... why? Matchup problems, the same as us and Atlanta/Detroit. And that year the Mavs won 60-something games, yet still were 1-3 against Golden State. I really don't want to see neither Atlanta nor Detroit in the playoffs. Right now our team is actually ahead of schedule...if they got the first seed they would be even farther ahead of schedule and you advocate the coach getting fired if they don't win it all. I'm speechless.

I'm speechless. I was watching the NBA channel and it mentioned that when it comes to playoffs it's about matchups. That some teams do better against certain teams like Atlanta pushing Boston to the edge even though they barely made the playoffs. So I can understand what is being said where the Magic do better against some teams then others. Best example Atlanta having the Magic's number because the Magic have matchup problems with the Hawks. I agree with that to an extent, but i remember last year a lot of "experts" were saying that toronto matched up with us really well and they were predicting a raps victory or a 7 game series at least. How did that work out? A 5 game roundhouse kick right to the raptor's jaw. i heard "bosh will demolish them, they can't guard him", "rasho will be superman's kryptonite", "tj ford and jose calderon will run circles around jameer" etc. We match up very poorly with det for obvious reasons and atl for reasons i have yet to figure out. I think we match up well with cleveland and boston (when healthy). I'm not saying we're better than boston because we aren't, but we could give them a really good series. I honestly think we could take cleveland in a 7-game series. Match-ups matter, but in the end the better team usually wins.
Need4Sheed 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 Only about 35% of the regular season is done. Way too much season to be looking ahead to playoff match-ups and what seed to set your eyes on. By the end of the season, Atlanta could be the #1 seed and Detroit not make the playoffs at all. Who knows? Way too early.
