  2. quote: Originally posted by Drain-O: BUT DIDNT YOU SEE ARIZA IN THE FINALS. HE SHUT DOWN THE ENTIRE TEAM WITH HIS OCTOPUS ARMS AND WAS AN AMAZING SHOOTER. I TOLD YOU GUYS HE WAS GOING TO BE AN ALL-STAR AND TURN INTO TRACY MCGRADY. HE IS GOING TO LEAD HOUSTON TO A CHAMPIONSHIP YOU JUST WATCH. OTIS IS A MORON. Ariza was very good in the finals, playing tough defense (which he did here), aggressively rebounding (which he did here), and shooting from the outside (WHICH HE DID NOT DO HERE). Also, he was out half the prior season with an injury. If he had worked as hard on his offense when he was here, he might not have been traded. Who knows, maybe being traded gave him the motivation to improve his shooting, and maybe it didn't. Maybe he would have improved as much here as did in LA. But if we had kept him, we wouldn't have reached the finals, since BCook was part of the trade to Houston for Rafer. No trade can be looked at in a vacuum.
  3. quote: Originally posted by Natmayo: His attitude problems stem from not getting along with the organizations he plays for. He and Jerry Sloan bumped heads. He also bumped heads with SVG. There was even an issue with his coach overseas. Im not doubting the talent, i'm doubting the head that is attached with the talent. You may be right, I don't know. Of course, Dwight bumped heads with SVG during the playoffs last year. Last year Dwight aired it out in the media, and Otis shot back with a - be a man and talk to us directly response. Dwight, SVG and Otis talked it out, and there wasn't really anything more in the media about it. I think part of the reason that Rafer is no longer here is that he aired it out in the media after Otis expressly and pointedly said to go through in-house first. If Carlos made his complaints in the media first, then I can see Otis not having him back; but I don't really remember him shooting off his mouth much. It's possible I have forgotten. If the attitude/bumping heads was kept in-house and only "rumoured" in the media, then Otis might have him back. I just remember both Jameer and Carlos saying that there was no personal conflict between them.
  4. quote: Originally posted by NickAnderson:Chemistry isn't everything, and usually doesnt take long to build anyway. Perfect example is Rafer. Integrating one new guy is a little different from having four or more new guys. I think that we have a couple of major advantages when it comes to the team chemistry issue, though, and it is the same one that Boston had a couple of years ago. The stars of the team are determined to make it work together, and are on the same page. I give some of the credit for that to Otis, and the job he has done of getting the right kind of people here, not just the right talent. With Dwight, Jameer, Rashard, and Hedo we had a core of good guys; not just talented ones. We have the majority of that core, and I think Vince Carter fits the same mold. Good guy, not just a talented player. I think the fact that Dwight, Jameer, and Rashard are already on that same page will "rub off", and that creating the chemistry won't be a problem.
  5. quote: Originally posted by Legal eagle:you'd be surprised to know that there are many more of us ... and I praise the respectful way we're all expressing our (sometimes differing) points of view ... this is the way it was all meant to be ... Actually, I wouldn't be too surprised; it just seems that the more vehement Carlos fans were frequently the most likely to post. Unfortunately the tendency in the past was for Meer's fans to "support" him by picking apart Carlos' game; and Carlos' fans did the same. Both sets were frequently off base, as the numbers didn't usually support the wildly different conclusions each espoused. I absolutely respect your right to have a different opinion and to voice it in a determined way; just as long as your reasoning and "supporting" evidence makes sense. I also expect the same respect, and try to hold myself to the same standard of supporting evidence. You are correct that this is the way it was all meant to be ... +1
  6. quote: Originally posted by Natmayo:I really don't care about fringe factions. I ignore what I want to. My problem is Carlos' attitude. Arroyo is a good player, but he is his own worst enemy with his attitude. If Carlos wants to toe the line and play on a quality team, then fine. But we have to see a different person than the one that left us a year ago. He has talent, but the attitude is a big question mark that I don't know if this organization wants to revisit. I am not sure if I agree with you or not on this one. I am not sure exactly what his attitude was that you object to. He wants to play, and he wants to get paid. I want a player with drive and enthusiasm for the game; I am just not sure how much "attitude" he actually had, and how much we attributed to him because of his fans' attitudes about him. Maybe it was just the "company line", but I seem to remember Jameer being very positive about Carlos and the competitive nature of their relationship at the time. Did I miss something later? I don't always get to follow the boards as closely as I would like, so that is possible.
  7. quote: Originally posted by leissaK:I wouldn't have it any other way (Arroyo backing up Jameer) after Nelson's all-star season. The only reason the debate happened about Arroyo starting is when Jameer was being inconsistent and Arroyo led us to some really nice wins. As a Puerto Rican, I would love to see Arroyo back on my favorite team. I think it's great when someone can represent my country in the NBA, or anywhere for that matter. If he doesn't come back though, I wont lose any sleep over it. Wow, two realistic Carlos fans in one thread. I am impressed. I agree with you completely. +1 !!
  8. quote: Originally posted by solciego:IMO this would not be a bad idea he is as solid backup as you can get and even could be a starter in many teams. No he can not be a strater over Jameer and this is coming from a Carlos fan although there was a time when they were preatty even stat wise and that was just IMO because Jameer was still working to become who he is now.Now I have to say that it seems that most people here are complaning more about his fans than his game call me carzy but it seems more like a racial thing in disguise you guys would love to say his carzy puertorican fans instead of fans but don't have the $%&&alls to come out and say it...Well when he came here the magic where not putting a lot of people in the stands and his presense here was felt imidiatly I belive the first to home games when he got here where sold out!!! Stop the hate!!!I prefer C.J Watson but if not Carlos would not be a bad idea specialy scince he has a huge puertorican fanbase living here in Orlando and we do need to fill our new arena when it opens.Plus the guy is not as bad as you guys want to make it seem..Boricua Hasta La Muerte!!! I agree with you that Carlos is about as good as we could hope to find as a backup, and am very encouraged to see a self-proclaimed Carlos fan make sense about him. You are correct that the numbers were similar when Jameer first came in the league, and that Jameer was not the player then that he is now. Here is my take - Jameer and Carlos were similar caliber players at that time; however, Jameer was newer to the league and needed the playing time to develop into the player he could become. Carlos had been in the league long enough that he was probably already near his ceiling, and would not significantly improve. My disagreement with you comes from you playing the race card. I don't have a problem with Carlos' fans because they are primarily Puerto Rican, I have a problem with them because, unlike you who admits he is not the second coming of Jordan, Magic, and/or Stockton; most of them seem to think he should be the starter regardless of anything anyone says. I don't hate the crazy Carlos fans because they are Puerto Rican, I am tired of them because they refuse to see his limitations. The fact that a large percentage of them are Puerto Rican is coincidental. I don't hate Turkoglu's crazy fans because a lot of them are Turkish, I am tired of them not recognizing his limitations (the MJ of Turkey??). Turk did some great things for us, but let's be realistic about him. Have people made negative comments about his fans communication skills that might be taken as racist, unfortunately yes, I think we have all seen a few. It is very hard to take someone seriously who; 1) refuses to accept that his favorite player has weaknesses, and 2) doesn't communicate well in written English on a (primarily) English board. Personally, I don't care how anyone writes, if their point makes a bit of sense; but when it doesn't, and it is poorly written as well, then people tend to "go off" on them. I don't have a problem with his Puerto Rican fans, I have a problem with his CRAZY fans; many of whom happen to be Puerto Rican. Anyway, I think you made a valid point about signing Carlos, and I am more than happy to welcome you to the boards. It seems you are a Carlos fan, not a CRAZY Carlos fan. There is a big difference, and the Magic can use all of the first kind we can get.
  9. quote: Originally posted by leissaK:Bringing Arroyo back would be a good idea. He's a serviceable backup PG who already knows the organization and the system. He'd fit in perfectly. I would bring back Arroyo as long as it is clear he is coming in to back upJameer. He knows the organization, but didn't he leave before SVG arrived? How does he, "know the system"? I haven't seen an answer to if we still have his Bird rights. I believe that we do, unless we waived him, which I don't think we ever did. If we don't have his Bird rights, then it is a moot point, as we can only offer the vet minimum; I don't see him signing anywhere for the minimum.
  10. Oops, I missed the Knicks. Oh well, aren't they really a D-League team anyway??
  11. "If" the Heat get Boozer and Odom, then they worry me a little. If they get one of the two, then they don't. Detroit? No Billups, Wallace, McDyess; no problem! Wizards? Who is going to distribute the ball to keep Arenas, Miller, Butler, and Jamieson happy; and who is going to play defense on that team? Foye is a shooting point, not a distributor. Nets? Ha, ha. Bobcats? Ha, ha, ha, ha. Chicago? Toronto? Indiana? Atlanta? No, no, no, and no. Milwaukee? Please, ROFLMAO. "If" Brand is back healthy and "if" they have a starting PG, the Sixers might play us tough. But I am less concerned without Andre Miller there. The Cavs don't scare me. As we proved last year, one man does not make a team. Now, let's look at the real competition. Jameer/AJ vs. Rondo/House Edge - Boston Carter/MP vs. R. Allen/T. Allen Edge - Orlando Barnes/Lewis/MP vs. Pierce/Scalabrine Edge - Orlando Lewis/Bass vs. Garnett/Davis? Edge - Even Howard/Gortat vs. Perkins/Wallace Edge - Magic I can only give Boston the edge on one position, and that is because of the backup. Meer/Rondo is pretty much a toss-up for me, depending on who is "on" that night. If they don't bring back Baby Davis, then the PF swings to the Magic as well. Plus, the Celtics are working against the clock at a number of positions. Players 31+ - House, R. Allen, Pierce, Scalabrine, Garnett, Wallace. Six out of your main rotation players. Wow! I am only scared if every single one of them comes through the season healthy and averaging 34 or less minutes. Anyone want to bet on that possibility??

  13. quote: Originally posted by iChef:I remember when the Magic originally had Big Ben Wallace. He was a beast in the paint and a great addition to the Magic at that time. Our GM was John Gabriel. He gave Ben Wallace to Detriot for some magic beans and who knows what else. Ben Wallace hurt us every time we played the Pistons. Ben is not that same player anymore. He was part of the S&T for Grant Hill. It was one of our biggest mistakes, as we had the option to keep Ben Wallace or Bo Outlaw. Bo was a fan favorite, and there was some "loyalty" associated with keeping him. One of Gabe's "heart over head" moves that cost us.
  14. quote: Originally posted by Blackhennie:Ben Wallace was just bought out. I know he is not the big ben of a few years ago but I could see him as a third c... I would still play gortat at 2nd c. I like him better than foyle. What do you think about big ben over foyle? I really like him as a vet with championship exp... I do think that bass can be our 3rd center and that back up pg is our biggest need, but If we do bring in a c, I think ben would help as a vet... your thoughts? p.s. min contract Probably not. We have 10 guys on our roster right now, and if the rumors are correct, we should have Barnes signed as our 11th shortly. To me that leaves two slots that we need to fill - another PG should be one of them, and I think a young big. The vet minimum varies by years in the league, so if we are bringing in a guy that will mostly sit on the bench, get garbage minutes, and work hard in practice - I would rather have a young, hungry guy. Leave the other two spaces open if you need to pick up a player due to injury. I think our front court is set for now. PG Chris Quinn Royal Ivey Will Bynum (RFA) CJ Watson (RFA) Damon Jones (only because knows SVG system) Brevin Knight-solid veteran, better than Lue Big Leon Powe Josh Powell Joel Anthony (RFA) Johan Petro (RFA)see comment on Swift Robert Swift (might actually improve practicing against Dwight/Gortat; working with Patrick Ewing?? Nelson/Quinn or Ivey?/AJ VC/Pietrus/Reddick Shard/Pietrus/Barnes/Anderson Bass/Shard/Anderson Howard/Gortat/Bass/Petro??
  15. quote: Originally posted by ReeceGaines: quote: Originally posted by Miller4Prez64:I'll say it again. There's no PG we could sign better than AJ. Barnes needs to be the first priority, then Wafer, then Carney I guess though i'm not a big fan. CJ Watson and Bobby Jackson would be significant upgrades at PG within our 2 million dollar price range; also possibly Flip Murray [though he might ask for more]; Flip is not a PG. Why do people keep putting him down as a possible PG?
  16. I would be very suprised if Marcin plays with any less energy and enthusiasm than he did last year. I think that the bottom line is that he wants to play. He has made enormous strides in developing his game over the last couple of years with the Magic, and I think he is smart enough to know that continuing to practice with Dwight and learn from Patrick Ewing will help him when he does get starters minutes. Will he be able to improve enough to take over the backup PF minutes to increase his playing time? Who knows, but I expect him to be sufficiently motivated to. Also, I think he is smart enough to know that if he doesn't continue to play as he did last year, the odds decrease on him being traded to somewhere he can start. Remember, as an RFA whose offer was matched, he has to agree to any trade this year. The harder he works, and the better he plays, the better offers the Magic get for him; and the greater the likelihood he can get traded somewhere to start. Even if he doesn't get traded, the more he works on his shot, the better the odds he gets more playing time. I think once he really sits down to think about it, the happier he might be.
  17. Picking up a talented young PF to take some of the rebounding load off your all-star C - $18M Matching your back-up C, who's drawing interest around the league - $34M Spanking the deepest pockets in the league, twice - Priceless
  18. quote: Originally posted by ucfknights22: quote: Originally posted by Mr. Burgundy: quote: Looks at it from the mavs perspective. We helped each other get what we want in the hedo trade. Then we sign bass from them outright, so they expect us to just let them have gortat. So they're thinking it's going to be a swap, then we turn around and say we're keeping gortat as well. It is pretty cold but I'm just glad we're on the winning side of the transactions. You dont think they would of kept bass if they needed him and had enough money?? They werent saying "oh we'll let the magic have him, they need him." they didnt want to pay that much money for a backup PF. We dont owe mavs anything, this is a business not out here to make friends and look out for other teams. I agree that it's a business and you do whatever you can to get the upperhand. But if Otis matched gortat before we signed bass, dallas would have resigned bass. So the way Otis handled this situation deprived them of both. That's what you sometimes get for trying to sign a "restricted" free agent.
  19. After a bit of research it seems that we could not trade Gortat until 3 months after the contract is signed, or December 15th; whichever is later.(Dec 15th in this case) Matching someone else's offer negates the possibility of a sign&trade. The sign and trade clause has to be in the contract the RFA signs, which it could not be in an offer sheet/contract. When you match that other team's contract offer sheet, you don't have an option to "adjust" it and include a S&T. The player is therefore treated like any other free agent that has signed a new contract, and falls under the 3 month/Dec 15th rule. Check with DoM, as he seems to be the CBA expert. It is possible I have missed something, but I think if we match Gortat, we can not trade him until Dec 15th, and then only if he agrees. I am not sure how long you have to wait if he doesn't agree - I think it is either 6 months, or the full season.

Thankfully it seems as if Otis sees the wisdom in matching and trying to move him instead of just letting him walk. As for Gortat, you're about to get an 800 percent pay raise. You'll be aight! I think as long as Gortat can keep adding to his already souped up BMW, he should be happy. Also, a question: I thought Denton got fired, so why does he still have all this info to offer on our current situation? He was just on espn radio discussing things, and one thing he brought up was that he thinks they will match Gortat and trade him to either Houston/Dallas. Take it for what it is worth. Dallas naw, who would we even want now that we got bass. You can't match the offer for a restricted free agent, and then trade him to the team that made the initial offer sheet. It isn't allowed under the CBA.

On the other hand, for this part of your post, smug doesn't even begin to cover it. I will take it as just hacked off, and let it pass this time. Generally, I enjoy your posts and agree with most of your viewpoints. I was going to tell you to relax and get a sense of humor, but your assume "DoM knows more than me" attitude obviously shows you do; you don't know me, and we all know what happens when you ASSUme.
  22. I don't remember exactly where DoM originally posted it. There's been so much action on these boards lately it's hard to keep track. Forgive me please DoM if this is simplifying it too much, but the basic idea is you do two trades - Battier to Orlando for portion of Hedo TE, which now gives Houston a TE equal to Battier's salary. Gortat to Houston for part of that TE back. On the second trade, Houston gives up TE equal to Gortat's new salary, but Orlando only gets half of it as a new TE.
  23. quote: Originally posted by Drunk on Mystery: quote: Originally posted by jmmagicfan:Don't hold back DoM, tell us how you really feel? You could end up with an ulcer suppressing your feelings like that. I will give the short version for you. We have the big TE from Hedo. We can use it to "get around" the BYC. In the future, read the FAQ. BYC basically means the receiving team needs to send out payroll to match the new salary, but sending team can only take back 50% of the new salary. (simplified version) No. BYC means that the players outgoing salary will be half their current salary or their previous year's salary(whichever is higher) for the team trading the player, but the player will still have incoming salary to the team receiving said player will still be equal to their new salary. If we trade Gortat to Houston, his salary for the purposes of the trade is only 2.9m for us, but it's still 5.8m for Houston, and as such Houston would have to send back out salary for the 5.8m number. I'm fully aware of how we could circumvent the BYC. I've written multiple threads about it. In fact, for the sake of simplicity, go ahead and assume that in any discussion of anything related to basketball, the Magic, the salary CAP, or anything else that might get discussed on this board, I know more than you. Sorry, DoM, but you misunderstood my post. I wasn't trying to say it was my idea, it just seemed you were getting overly upset having to explain it multiple times. I read your original explanation in a former post and it was very comprehensive and clear. I was simply trying to save you having to go through all of it again, and simplifying if for the other poster. That's part of the reason I seconded your "read the FAQ".
  24. IDK - If he wanted to come here for the vet minimum, or even the leftover MLE, I might have to consider it. I seem to remember him playing the point on an Olympic team, and being great. Also, he and Jameer are buddies, and have worked out/played against each other several summers in PA. I can definitely see him playing the third guard role, ala Vinnie "Microwave" Johnson back in the late 80's.
  25. quote: Originally posted by Drunk on Mystery: quote: Originally posted by MagicFanBen: quote: Originally posted by DontPushMe:dont forget about the BYC thing, its not going to be easy to trade him for 6 months Actually it may be a lot easier to trade him since teams wanting him would only have to send back a player making around 2.5 million. Which is a player on a rookie deal. That's not how BYC trades work. What we can take back and what the other team would have to send are different things. I've already explained this well over a dozen times. I'm ****ing sick of it. If you can't spend the time to read the ****ing Salary Cap FAQ, stop talking. Christ.
