Hypothetically speaking.... What if we kept Webber?

Recommended Posts

With draft day rolling around, and the fact that we have spent weeks agonizing on who the 22nd best rookie is going to be, how about spending some time re-writing history. It will have the same impact as the other subjects: none.

Here goes:

Shaq tells Gabe that Penny isn't worth a nickel, so they should draft Webber and let them form the best front line in the game.

A few chain reactions to contemplate:

1) Scott Skiles remains the PG for at least 1 or 2 more years

2) No need to bring in The Googles

How would history have been re-written?

Weeks/Months of speculation as to whether or not Otis Smith is pursuing signing Chris Webber to help our front court never happens. Otis Smith as our GM may never happen. Basketball as we know it may cease to exist. Cats and dogs getting married, the Stay Puft Marshmallow man, Sears catelogs. MADNESS.

Only in California my friend.

Webber instead of Penny... the Magic fail to make it to the finals. The team goes on a longer moer successful run overall (many years in the conference finals), Shaq still leaves for LA, Webber still becomes an underachiever, but we stay just good enough to miss out on guys like Dwight and become mired in even more mediocrity than we have been for the past decade.

agree completely, I know Penny was a shmuck that had a lot to do with Shaq leaving, but he was the perfect compliment to the big man. Look at what happened with paring him with Kobe and then D. Wade. Championship.

Shaq grew jealous of Penny just as he did w/Kobe, that wouldn't have happened with C. Webb.

On the other hand, people often forget what a flake C. Webb was with Washington & GS early in his career.

At the end of the day, it's impossible to predict the dynamics of two such individuals. Maybe the odds of Shaq staying in Orlando improve a little.
