The thing to keep in mind is that if Detroit is stalling in talks and they are offering Prince and Maxiel, that should show you how much Atlanta values Smith.

 

Hedo and JJ is not nearly as good as that package. This is the problem right now. If Otis somehow got that trade to go through, he would be GM of the year. We would have the most versatile lineup in the league.

Im all about trading Hedo while his value is high, dont get me wrong. And Id dance my fat as.s all night if we were to jump on JSmith. But heres the question, who then becomes our backup SF?? Do we now make Pietrus a backup to come in for Lewis? That would probably make Courtney Lee our starter.

 

My point being it changes the dynamic of our team greatly.

 

You cant start Pietrus then have him back up Shard, so do we have to go obtain a SF if we were to pick up smith??

Bogans is capable of playing backup SF, and Cook reminds me more of a SF than a PF anyway.

Hedo and Cook?

 

IMO, Hedo is darn near close to being better than Prince. He's not nearly the same defender, but he's a better scorer and distributor.

 

Battie and Cook are more epxerienced big men, but not as good as Maxiell by any stretch.

 

If we throw in a first round pick (or even two), I think our deal would be more valuable.

Fair enough. I dont know if I see Cook defending even second string SF in this league but offensively, yes.

 

If we were to pick up Smith, would we even have Bogans??

 

I know its beyond the rhelm of possibility that we obtain Smiths services. But if the stars aligned and we did, I think wed have an issue.

I think there's about a 2% chance we get him, but it's fun to play along.

 

I don't think backup SF is much of a problem. Lee comes in at SG, Pietrus slides over to the 3. Or Battie comes in for Shard, Smith slides over to the 3 to go big. You don't want him playing huge minutes at the 3, but he could do it for stretches. In a pinch Bogans can play there a bit if you want to go smaller. You've got to remember that you almost never see all 5 of the second team on the floor at the same time...they'd get killed. You try and rotate them in and out with some starters still in the lineup.

 

And worst case, there's always wing guys laying around in FA you can pick up for cheap. Guys like Hermann, Quinton Ross, Juan Dixon and some more are sitting out there begging people to sign them right now.
