2018 Official Offseason Thread

Recommended Posts

Here is your list of free agent point guards currently available this summer. So, let's see our options.

1) Anyone over 30 is probably out - too old to fit in with the prime of our core, already declining, or only a backup. We can't afford them, or they aren't going to want to spend their prime when we aren't ready to take a big step.

2) Can't get off their current teams bench for any significant minutes. (Under 13 MPG) We don't need another backup unless we waive Mack, and pay him the $1M guarantee to go away.

3) Career 3 PT under 33.3%

So, that leaves Thomas and Larkin as the UFA possibilities; and Napier, Ferrell, and VanVleet as your RFAs that meet those requirements. I think Larkin is destined to be a career backup, the productivity just isn't there. I'm not sure we have seen enough of Ferrell or VanVleet to know if they have starter potential. Napier's numbers are comparable to Ferrell/VanVleet, with more experience; but he just put it together, and we let him go once. Would he even be interested in coming back? Yes, Thomas was very rusty when he came back, but that is why we might get him on a reasonable offer, as he has something to prove; and that drive to prove himself is what made a #60 pick into an all-star. Rose's career 3pt shot isn't very good, but he is still a former MVP with something to prove, which is why I might take a flier.

Would we say Van Fleet starting caliber or like a slightly better Cory Joseph?

There's optimism he'd be like a jameer Nelson level starter. Best run last season was 30 games of about 12 ppg on 8.9 fga and 45% three point shooting. That's off the bench sharing shots with a bunch of other players.

Reasonable chance he's something between Trey Burke from last year and Darren collison. Augustin with better defense.

Worst case scenario he's Shabazz

Why not just run this year with DJ and some G-League backup PG? I don’t see the need In forcing it. Yea we need a PG for the future but if nothing presents itself this summer that makes sense I’m fine addressing that next draft/summer.

I’d rather that then throw multiple year deals at a guy who might be average.

There's a rumour in Greece we might be bringing Nick Calathes back to the NBA.

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/23377655/nick-calathes-plans-return-nba-euroleague ; but it doesn't say anything about the Magic being interested/making the pitch. Definitely an interesting idea. Not sure if Dallas still owns his rights though.

Nobodies discussing Iwundu. I think he can run the point. He did it a lot in college. Has good handles just needs to mature into the position. Maybe Clifford gives him more time there.

Great post and I agree.  He was listed as an SF but did exactly what you describe in college.  Probably a year or two away but worth trying to develop him as our PG. That would be a dream come true.

Mavericks do not own his rights anymore since Mavericks traded his rights to the Grizzles in 2013

It's here. Article in Greek but when it translates you can kind of make out the story linking us to him.

Hey we agree on something for the first time ever.

we actually agree on quite a bit I just don't quote you each time but if The Forum let you see likes and upvotes analytics you'd discover I'm one of you're bigger supporters. Unless it had to do with Trae Young or KD. Polarizing players in their own right. lol

You're right, I mis-read because he was drafted by the Grizz, rights traded to the Mavs, and then the rights were traded back/he played for the Grizz 2013-2015 when he went back to Greece. 6'6" combo guard who averaged 14.5ppg, 8 apg, and 4 rpg last season is interesting.
