2017 Official Offseason Thread

I updated our salary cap figures in the first post. but here it is again:

assuming a 101 million salary cap, here's what our summer situation is going to look like:

Biyombo: 17,000,000

Fournier: 17,000,000

Vucevic 12,250,000

Ross: 10,500,000

Augustin: 7,250,000

Gordon: 5,504,000

Hezonja: 4,078,320

assuming the 4th pick in the draft: 3,841,000

Payton: 3,332,340

the 26th pick: 1'221,600

a waived Watson: 1,000,000

a minimum salary slot: 815,615

a minimum salary slot: 815,615

That comes to 84,608,490

so, making no other changes, we'll have 16,391,510 in salary cap space.

a max contract for a 0-6 year guy is $25,250,000. We would need to cut 8,858,490 to reach this level.

a max contract for a 7-9 year guy is 30,300,000. We would need to cut 13,908,490 to reach this level.

a max contract for a 10+ year guy is 35,350,000. We would need to cut 18,958,490 to reach this level.

This is depressing IMO.

Really hope our new GM drains the swamp here. Shed some dead weight and give us more flexibility moving forward.

eh, shedding salary isn't going to be that big of a deal. we could trade vucevic with a 2018 second rounder if we really wanted to clear space for a guy.

you bring up something I've always thought about.

how long do titles count in the "at least we've won a championship" discussion? And do you get to bring titles from other cities with your franchise? Like does Atlanta get to say "at least we've won a title"? if not, is it because their title was won in St Louis? Because it happened 60 years ago? Both?

Titles dont transfer to other cities. Droughts eventually outweigh championships.

What's the probability the magic decide to trade for Carmelo? 60% likelihood? 70%?

ownership desperate for a marketable player

we have a need for a 3 to play next to Gordon

makes too much sense.

That would secure the tank for next year...

nah, they'd be better. probably contend for the playoffs. But it wouldn't be sustainable and it has a ceiling as a 7th seed at best and that peak would maybe last two years.

I don't see it happening, but not because we wouldn't go for it. I believe Melo has a no trade clause. But, 31 years old, has the ability to opt out the season after next. I'd consider it for Fournier, DJ and our late first, but not much more than that
