Lol at you guys being upset over a one year deal for Burke. Didn't they talk about competition earlier? I'd rather watch Burke then Augustin, if Payton is being benched. And a one year deal is not going to hurt us.

Right because competition means bringing in a player that's damn near identical to what you have already on your sorry ass team.

No what you do is you bring in a guy who brings something else. Like Marcus Smart. Dude can't shoot like EP (although has show some abilities there) but his defense and intangibles might either put EP on the bench permanently or makes EP work even harder.

35 seems about right.

we gotta figure out what happens to the team in January. only 11 wins over the past 4 seasons.

35 wins is way optimistic. Every team in western conference top to bottom got better than us. Even the Kings added some pieces, and on paper are better than us. The east is still top heavy but teams like the Hornets who had a down year should be fighting for playoff spot. Philly will be making noise as well. That leaves our team with the likes of the Bulls, Nets, Pacers, and Hawks a clear step below the rest of the east. If those are the only beatable opponents then 25 wins is more realistic.

The only way to bring Smart is sign him to an offer sheet but keep in mind the Celtics can match any reasonable offer and our cap space isn't that much anyway. Then if you overpay for Smart you lose some flexibility.

Yep, other teams have got better. I love seeing that the Kings got better--1 less team to worry about competing with us for a top 5 pick. The more those other teams improve the better. The more we don't improve this year the better.

Also, I don't mind Burke if it means DJ gets dealt somehow.

Thats not how it works. Lakers beat the Warriors last year. You dont only beat teams you are better than on paper any more than you never lose to BKN.

Smart isn't a FA. Gotta trade for him.

Dude that was a lucky game. Im not going to use an outlier as any proof of anything. On paper, every team in the west got better than us and that's a fact. Obviously the games are played on the court but if we are discussing win projections right now, it's kind of hard to say 35 wins when you compare to the rest of the league.

On paper Philly is bound to battle injuries.

35 wins is pretty realistic.

If you want to be pessimistic because that's who you are, 30

wins would be ideal but anything less than that is a colossal failure and Vogel might get shown the door.

The Celtics have shopped point guard Marcus Smart around the NBA to clear cap room to sign Gordon Hayward, and the Knicks have interest, according to an NBA source.

According to the source, the Knicks are looking into trade options to fill the cap space they have – about $15 million once they renounce the cap hold on Derrick Rose. Smart makes just $4.5 million this season and then becomes a restricted free agent in 2018.

Phil Jackson, before he was fired, and coach Jeff Hornacek each said the Knicks were attempting to bring better defenders into the fold. Smart certainly qualifies. They also are trying to add young players to the roster and Smart, 23, fits into their age frame.

Smart’s defense and 3-point shooting are deemed better than his playmaking abilities, so he doesn’t fall into the category of being the veteran point-guard mentor for French lottery pick Frank Ntilikina.

It’s unclear what kind of asset Boston is seeking in return for Smart.

Smart has played for the Celtics for three years since being selected No. 6 overall out of Oklahoma State in 2014. Smart averaged 10.6 points and 4.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds last season, starting 24 games. He’s shot just 29.1 percent in his career from 3-point land.

Though he’s 6-foot-4, Smart is such a rugged defender, he has been deployed at times guarding the 7-foot-3 Kristaps Porzingis when the Celtics play the Knicks. After effectively guarding Porzingis after one contest, Celtics coach Brad Stevens remarked it was “kinda crazy, but [smart] likes those types of challenges.”

Hayward is seeking the maximum $29.7 million for his first year, forcing the Celtics to trim some space. They reportedly have talked about a sign-and-trade deal with the Jazz in which they would give up small forward Jae Crowder. ESPN reported the Knicks are one of several teams Boston contacted.

Ok I stand corrected. But what player do we have is the equivalent of Smart, that we can send out? I would say none. And if the Celtics don't want salary back, is he worth a pick? We will have to pay him soon and that still means a long term deal. In fact trading for him is worse since we have to give something up to acquire the guy then overpay to keep him later.

why would we give Walton a roster spot when we don't know if he can even be an NBA player and he'd be one injury away from being a high minute backup?

just give him the two way contract where he could play in the d-league and then spend 3 months with the team as we see fit.

you're right.

Can give them that OKC pick. We can give them Watson who's only guaranteed 1 million of his 5 million this year and just can waive him. They don't necessarily need an player.

It's all to make room for Hayward. Smart makes just a shade over 4 million, Boston needs 4 million in space to get Hayward.

No one is saying we have to over pay him.
