Payton can't shoot. Everyone on the Grizz knew that(which is why Fournier got doubled and Payton was open) and even Payton himself knew it(which is why he had to pass up an open look in favor of dribbling around into a mess of people). Seems like the only person who forgot was Vogel.

Yeah I don't get why Payton is in there when we need a last second shot... in the event that our first option, in this case Fournier, could not get himself open, we needed somebody else to be able to create their own shot or at least shoot with high percentages.

I think it was a way to show Elf that he has confidence in him. He won't start him but with his psyche, to make him feel like he views him as an important piece still, keeps Elf from possibly shutting down.
