Progression to the mean would be more accurate

 

Basically we had a mean statistical model for what we could expect from Oladipo this season. Oladipo was far below that for a few months. We predicted that he'd have a bounce back that would balance out his season. This is a regression.

 

 

Statistical regression is usually mentioned when a player is performing way above his talent and a fall is coming soon. Hence the common interpretation that statistical regression is bad.

But, rising numbers (in this case) are a progression. I just not as commonly used as the phrase "regression to the mean".
