The Dwight Howard Drama Unfolds

Recommended Posts

I seem to like all the Rockets fans that have visited and I also hope they get Dwight.

It must be the weather there, kinda like ours here in central Florida. Makes for happy people :D

LOL, I kind of like them too which is why I'm not sure I should curse them by wishing Dwight Howard on them.

As long as the Lakers don't get him right?

I don't see Bynum as a game changer - not like Howard.

Scouting Reports:

Overview: An extremely young center who has started to realize the potential that made him a lottery pick. Really tall, really long, and still very raw. Has an incredible frame that will put on as much weight as needed. Moves extremely well for a center, and has impressive leaping ability. Very agile and coordinated. Has great hands for a player his size. Good fit in Phil Jackson’s offense. One of the most efficient players in the league if his shortened performance in 2008 is any indication. Doesn’t have a lot of post moves, but scores by working off the ball and going at the rim aggressively. Has received tutelage from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, which expedited the development of his post moves. Doesn’t show much of a jumper, but won’t ever be asked to play off the block. Rebounds the ball extremely well on both ends. Has become more adept as a help side defender, but still needs some experience to reach his potential defensively. Has a reputation for not always bringing great energy to the floor. Not the same player he was as a rookie out of St. Joseph HS. Has the chance to be something special, and his development would have been one of the major stories of the 2008 season, until a knee injury sidelined him for most of the year. Still shockingly young, and thus is nowhere near a finished product. Has all-star potential and then some.

Offense: A developing offensive center who can get by on effort, athleticism, and vastly improved awareness at this point. Gets most of his offensive from post ups, off of cuts, and from offensive rebounds. Will make some plays running the pick and roll as well. Catches everything thrown to him around the rim. Doesn’t show much of a jump shot. Establishes deep position in the post thanks to his excellent frame. Pretty effective over both shoulders in the post. Developing a nice left hand. Shows much better touch than he did early in his career. Needs to improve his footwork and not settle for tough shots when he’s unable to get deep enough inside. Not bad at putting the ball on the floor once or twice. Extremely nimble and agile. Will pull off some devastating moves at times. Not very turnover prone all things considered. Great offensive rebounder. Length and agility make him a force here. Very good at moving to the open spot by the rim and catching alley oop passes for easy buckets. Gets a lot of dunks by virtue of his teammates. Sets solid screens, and rolls to the rim looking to finish. Becoming an effective offensive player, but is still only scratching the surface of what he can be.

Defense: A difference maker on the defensive end due to his ability to alter shots in the paint. Has the lateral quickness and leaping ability to be a very good shot blocker, but has the potential to be great. Will step out and hedge the pick and roll when he has to. Length and agility allows him to contest everything. A bit foul prone around the rim, but that’s to be expected from a center his age. Improving there at a rapid pace. Displays outstanding rebounding ability, and can go outside of his area to clean the glass. Has the potential to be a force as he continues to gain experience. Needs to learn to go straight up and develop the anticipation and awareness to maximize his incredible physical assets. Understanding of team defensive concepts is not very developed at this point. Lives off his instincts a little too much. Still very young here.

Bynum is not a game changer by any means, no matter what Fakers fans think. He is overrated trash and I do not want him near this team. The only useful thing he can do on a team is be trade bait for another dumb team.

Take your fan hat off and stop with the blind hatred. It's very unbecoming. What is so wrong with recognizing genuine talent when you see it even if it may not be the best fit for your team? Would you feel as if you are cheating on Dwight or something?

If you can package Dwight and maybe Hedo to the Lakers, then you can dump J-Rich and hopefully Duhon with Bynum mid-season.

These guys are doing a poor job explaining why we don't want bynum. Its not because he's not talented. he's young and likely to get better.

Bynum is an all star center. Bynum is good offensively and is the most talented player we could get in a trade for dwight.

The problem is we don't see how we can win a championship around bynum. He's not exceptional and you need that to win a championship. you can replicate bynum's ability to score with lesser players. You can replicate bynum's rebounding with lesser players. You can replicate his defense with lesser players.

The things that make lebron, dwight, younger kobe, chris paul, etc so different than the kevin loves, the monta ellises, the joe johnsons, and the blake griffins of the nba is the first group has aspects of their game that they do so well you can't replicate their production with multiple other players.

Bynum belongs in the second category. its not that hard to find a combination of power forwards/small forwards/centers that can give you what bynum does. We're much better off getting a package of young players and draft picks and tanking until we can find an elite guy and hopefully the young players we get now develop into second or third options or at least solid starters by the time we find that elite guy.

this doesn't even consider bynum's inconsistency, his injury history, his on the court issues (flagrant fouls against dallas/jacking up threes) or his off the court issues.

On a side note, this whole point of view is why I like russell westbrook so much. He gets to the rim so well. He could be special if he puts everything together.

He's a Magic fan speaking his mind on a Magic message board. I'd say he's well within his rights to say what he said. On the other hand, you are Laker fan coming onto a Magic message board and calling out a Magic fan? What's wrong with this picture?

In the past - and especially during playoff series - we provided posters that were fans of the opposing team with far less leeway than Magic fans. Of course, that was usually because the fans of the opposing team only came on here to flame. There was maybe one respectful poster out of 10. It has been different lately with this collection of Houston fans. They are cordial, logical, and bring something to the conversation. To a lesser extent, you have done the same. But you still need to remember that you are posting on a Magic board as a Lakers fan. That isn't exactly the best of positions for you, considering our teams' mutual history.

Now, I know it is super tough to be a Lakers fan, but try to remember that when it comes to misery, we're the ones with all the rings.

I would never wish injury on anyone. And that is not what being a true fan means, if that's what you're implying. Dwight did a lot for this city. Its time to move on.

I'm still wishing for a career ending injury before he signs a new contract.

I have to say that a high majority will be with you on your comment and not with me.

For, me a career ending back injury where he can't play - that would work.

Scouting Reports:

Game Highlights:

Not saying Bynum isn't good - he is arguably the 2nd best center in the game, but Dwight is a game changer - I don't want to talk Dwight up because I hate him now, but he dominated Bynum when he played against him the last time - just destroyed the guy.

Bynum has better offensive talent, but Dwight has power that makes up for his offensive shortcomings.

Anyway, point isn't that Bynum is bad, he's good, but he isn't a game changer like Dwight Howard. Howard is in the class of Kobe, Lebron, and Durant. I only like Durant out of that group - hate Lebron.

Maybe I should stop being a fan with all the hate - Brian Hill, far and away #1, Lebron a distant #2, but hated pretty strongly, then Shaq and Howard - both idiots, then you've got David Stern - horrible, then people you might not like, then people you do like.

I'd much prefer a McGrady thing: his back hurts just enough that he's never dominating again. The Magic may be the development league for the big markets, but that doesn't mean we can't hope for a little schadenfreude...
