Unless Cleveland raises multi-year offer that starts around $3.5M, Matt Barnes will sign a 1-year, $1.7M deal with Lakers, sources tell Y!

less than 20 seconds ago via web

And the Lakers get stronger...

And Barnes would once again play ahead of a player making more than twice what he makes (Luke Walton)....

Of course, there's one other important factor to consider here: The Heat probably don't need to win 68 games. My model assumes they'll play their best players as much as they can, but any such projection system breaks down a bit with elite teams that can coast at the end of the regular season. Most likely, the Heat will need to win only 63 or so to clinch home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. If they hit that mark with six or seven games to play, you can bet all the sugarcane in Florida that Wade, James and Bosh will see very little of the court.

As a result, the most realistic estimate for this team is more like 65 wins.

More importantly, it isn't 70 or 72 -- the targets that everybody might be talking about during the season if Miami appears on track to challenge the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls' all-time record of 72-10. To achieve the 70-win plateau, the Heat not only would have to be interested enough to play their starters during some meaningless April games but also would need better-than-average health from their three stars and/or surprise seasons from at least a couple of the role players.

But whether it's 65, 68.3, 70 or 72, the overriding conclusion is the same: Miami is now the favorite to win it all. With three stars and just enough role-playing talent around them to fill in the cracks, a Miami-L.A. Lakers Finals next June almost seems preordained.

Now if we could just get this pesky regular season out of the way ...

Hollinger also had the Cavs winning 70 games last year.

It just makes more sense to join the Magic over any team on his list. He could be our captain and have full control of the ball handling duties. Also he will be teamed up with the most dominant center in the game. If you thought Paul and Chandler looked good imagine Paul and Howard. Lewis will also be another scoring option for Paul. And every one of our role players can score as well. We could offer Paul an starting role and 38mpg in the same division as the big 3 in Miami. Who knows then we could probably go after Anthony as well with Paul and Howard here. No state tax and we make the playoffs EVERY season. What more would he want. We have all the pieces except a high caliber pg. Nelson is very good but he is no Chris Paul.

Ezzp, there is no way the Knicks trade their entire roster other than Amare for CP3. I'm not sure the Hornets want to take on so many players either...

NOLA would have only 12 players under contract (nearly all expiring or 2yr deals) and all of those players are very tradable assets that are young, cheap and with solid upside.

They would essentially have an exciting young team with all the cap flexibility and assets needed so that they could trade for or acquire any free agent available to them.

The players they get are better than draft picks as they all are on cheap 1-2 yr contracts plus they've already proven to be quality NBA level players some w/very big upside potential.

You're ignoring the fact that the Knicks are trading away their entire roster....there is some people who believe they don't even want to trade Gallinari.

The Knicks do it because it gives them a really solid core and position themselves to make a serious run at Carmelo...since they would be over cap they would have MLE & BAE + min...even if what they got wasn't super high quality the addition of Chris Paul would create a huge amount of excitement in NYC especially after the decision. MSG would be sold out every night. In addition they get the perfect complementary big to Stoudemire.

Paul/Felton

_____/______

_____/Posey

Stoudemire/

Okafor/Mozgov

they couldn't make a serious run at carmelo. The big three works in miami because they all took pay cuts. Paul and Amar'e make too much money. Carmelo would have to take something like 12 million a year to make it work.

To make a run at carmelo they would have to be under the cap. they wouldn't have any exceptions.

this is like when DeShawn Stevenson F-ed himself a few years ago by opting out. Poor Barnes. I cant believe thats the best he could get.

trying to make Paul as unappealing as possible so it won't be as much of a disappointment when we don't get him.
