A.J.; Tradebait or a Salary dump?(ESPN)

Recommended Posts

Anyway, he made Chris Sheridan's top 10 list of the players most likely to be dealt at the 2010 trade deadline...coming in at number 5...

quote:

5. Anthony Johnson, Magic

Back in 2000, Johnson was the only player to be dealt on trade deadline day, going from Atlanta to Orlando for a conditional future second-round draft pick. Stan Van Gundy had no use for him in the Finals after AJ had been a rock for the Magic through the first three rounds of the playoffs (Yes, Stan had to play Jameer Nelson. But couldn't AJ have gotten a sniff when Rafer Alston was struggling?), and somebody in contention and playing on tilt will want some veteran insurance at the point (that could be you, Bryan Colangelo, when you look down your bench and take a long, hard gaze at Roko Ukic. Just be prepared to throw in a healthy chunk of cash to help Magic owner Rich DeVos tackle his luxury-tax tab). We also should note here that the Miami Heat have a $4.26 million trade exception (Marcus Banks) that expires next Feb. 15, and Portland has a $2.9 million exception (Ike Diogu) that expires Feb 18.

Other notables...

1.) T-Mac

2.) Eddie Curry

3.) Q. Richardson

4.) Kenny Thomas

6.) Tony Battie

7.) Erick Dampier

8.) Wilson Chandler

9.) Nazr Mohammed

10) Rafer Alston

unless we get a capable backup for OUR postseason run, AJ isn't going anywhere.

Don't really understand why he's on this list.

Chris Sheridan obviously wasn't paying very close attention to the Magic through most of the playoffs.

A.J. was only a "rock" in the Cavs series. He wasn't very good against the Celtics, and was even worse against Lou Williams and the Sixers.

Why can't these guys figure out that Otis is not concerned with freeing up money for the sake of it at this juncture? I doubt we "dump" anything. We are in it to win it.

He could be a salary dump when his contract is up. But for right now, is he even still officially signed to our team. NBA.com as him as an unsigned UFA? Johnson, Anthony G 34 12yrs UFA* ORL --- ---, New team and Contract are blank. Did we resign him? Also, our team focus should be on finding a decent 2nd pg and using AJ 3rd.

From Howard Mass...RealGM lead adminastrator...

I bet A.J. would be listed because he is an expiring contract. Teams are going to want those which is why J.J. Redick will also be someone possibily in demand.

Gortat can be traded Dec 15 but he will be BYC till July so it will make it harder to deal him but not impossible.

So I was right then that we do have AJ under contract but as of the end of next season he will be a Free Agent so that would put him in the salary dump category and or put him more likely in a multiplayer trade package like what we did w/ Foyle to get Alston before the Carter trade. We need a 2nd string pg and put AJ at 3rd string then possibly trade him later before the Feb. trade deadline.
