Something needs to be done, or the NBA will continue to slip into obscurity. The NFL is king, and the MLB, even with all their conspiracies, are above the NBA. Why? Their game is pure. Sure, debate how players got to be the way they are. Complain about training techniques and contracts. But when you sit down to watch the game, you are watching the best athletes in the world perform their sport, not some middle-aged guys in neutral colors determine the outcome of the contest.

And really, it is a shame. I love basketball because it is about people. You see every facial expression, every smile, every stare down. The game relies on teamwork more than any other sport. In basketball, it is virtually impossible for a smug athlete to go home after a loss without a guilty conscience. In football, a receiver can say 'I caught every ball they threw at me' or an outfielder can say 'I was 3-3 with 2 home runs. My teammates were the ones who failed."

Basketball is about personality. 5 guys coming together, many of different backgrounds and even different languages. These guys have to buy into it, and the good teams become close. Look at the Magic. They are friends. If Adonal Foyle and Rafer Alston never touched a basketball, they would never meet. Their social circles would be completely different. Even Jameer and Dwight, who are now close friends. Basketball is about people and personalities and chemistry. I don't want to see that tainted because of some egos that want to make the most money possible. I don't want to see guys who put blood sweat and tears into a game be cheated out of an opportunity. For a referee to have a direct impact on the outcome of a game is asinine and needs to be fixed. Immediately.

This is a great post, but honestly money is everyone's number one priority. Although you said you don't want to see the players be cheated out of an opportunity, I think they can care less. The only thing NBA players care is about the money. Why do you think all they do is try to get max contracts. If they wanted to really "win" championships, they would just take less money and create a stacked team. But their real intent is to make as much as money as possible, and if a championship or MVP award comes their way, they'll be happy.

The people I do feel that are getting cheated are us, the fans. We invest time and our hard earn money because we actually work for a living instead of playing basketball, and use it on watching extremely rich people play basketball. And we want nothing but competition, and exciting game, and drama, not some old referees who wanted to be basketball stars but were not good enough so they decided to mess up the game with their lack of calls/ over abundance of calls.

Getting back to my own point, the NBA will never be the same as it was 15-35 years ago, because back then, the superstars were making as much as a 12th man does now, and although inflation has occured, the salary increased much more than the economy, so back then, players didn't make as much money relative to living standards, then they do now. Presently, you see a huge gap between NBA salaries, and the average salary needed for middle-class living.

So I ask you, don't feel bad for the players, but show sympathy towards fans, because we are the one's suffering from this literal piece of **** they call the Referee.

And on O-Dub's comment, I completely agree with you. That's why whenever someone asks me to do something else, I always choose that other activity before basketball. Because really, this is not helping me, it used to be great entertainment, but now it's just plain tainted.

I remember Olajuwan signing a 10 year contract for 26 million, everybody went crazy.

I agree with you completely. It is not as much fun anymore. We expect people to die on the floor because of their high contracts. They cant play better when they are paid better, can they?

Still, I say these contracts are insane. I would eat the rim and all the front row fans for that kind of money. They get used to it after a while probably. But nothing lasts forever, they shouldnt take it for granted.

We ve seen some high paid players looking for minimum wage jobs later in their lives.

This could be a watershed game in the pursuit of a ring. If we can dig deep and kick their butts in Philly, with this lineup, we should be able to ride some serious momentum into either Boston or Chicago.

I'm gonna say we get it done and move on to the second round tomorrow night.

I agree entirely. If you've read my recent posts you'll know I'm all about confidence. I know SVG and the guys don't like to talk about but it is a fact that when you are confident you play better. I'd like to think we'll win but just hope I'm not getting lost in some kind of Hollywood mighty Ducks movie, but this is the play-offs and anything can happen. We have won without Dwight, however, no Meer, no Lee, if we win and I sincerely hope we do, it will be the stuff of legend (too much?). I think we can get it done, our bench has shown resolve in the past and we can get it done when it counts.

You'll see both teams playing hard tonight but we'll be playing harder and that's why we'll win. If I was in the roster or even part of the organisation proper I'd just want to put this to bed and move on, why prolong it unnecessarily?

My only real concern is Reddick and whether he has the mental maturity to step up to the big occasion especially on defence.

Oh, and I also think the officials will be making statements tonight and I think we'll see calls go our way quite a lot. Philly's had their fun off the court, won't be fun tonight, no sir!

GO MAGIC - all the way

Dwight elbowed the wrong guy, he needs to bow Iguodala to straighten that jaw that he keeps sticking out when he makes a play. Magic got a chance to win. Philly is coming out strong, but soon will realize that Gortat will maul anyone inside.

I too am concerned with Marcin and the fouls this evening...not because I believe there is a conspiracy against the Magic tonight and the refs/league want Philly to win, but Gortat get's a lot of whistles as it is, added exposure in the playoffs for an unknown, this could have doom written all over it...I think he averaged 5pf per 36 in the regular season, he definitely has the ability to commit some silly fouls...

the way I look at it, Philly nearly escaped a loss to the Cavs bench in overtime a few weeks back, the trick here is the Andre's. If Orlando can slow Miller and AI^2 down, we have a fighters chance, and if just if our offense is flowing tonight, Rashard and Hedo are able to pick it up, we might just do this thing...

conversely, 2 week ago Orlando got handled by the Bucks with nearly the same team facing Philly tonight WITH Courtney Lee...

here's to hoping we can weather the storm...

Kind of sad and funny that two elbow actions by Dwight in one game costed us two starters.

I predict a close game if we

a) don't get into foul trouble early and

B) box out and rebound, esp. at the defensive end.

Otherwise SVG might panic.

I have simple Comcast without the box, just an old analog tv and I get both channels. What is your cable provider?

And, I agree with some of the posts above about money. People making millions of dollars a year "putting a ball through a hole" so to speak. You can throw in there other sports and entertainment businesses like movies and music. Why would anyone go to college when you can make millions by "pretending to be someone else"?

As stated earlier, if Gortat stays out of foul trouble then we have a close game, if Gortat picks up two quick ones, then we are fuuuuuucked.
