It just goes by each team's W-L record, but taking into account the number of total games each team has played. If every team had played the same amount of games then it would go by win%.

I'll stick with the traditional standings, the ones that count for playoff positioning and are by winning %.....that one says we are #2 in the East....

ORL is basically 2nd global in winning %, and it would be 1st if the Celtics had one more lose, since ORL beat them, but it also would be 3rd or 4th if the Spurs and/or the Suns had 13 wins.

Interesting that right now, the 1st 2 teams in the NBA are East teams.

Of course, it is still too early, you see how things would change with a win here and a lose there. I hope ORL is in the same or better position come February.

Global 1st 8:

Bos

Orl

SA

Phx

Utah

Dal

Det

Clev

Well, if you believe the hype that overall the wst is more competitive, then this would make sense.

If you have a small number (2 in this case) of Eastern Conference teams that stand out above the rest, they SHOULD be beating the rest of the East on a regular basis, and since most of their games come against Eastern Conference teams, in theory they should have a higher winning percentage.

Teams like the Spurs and the Suns would have a theoretically harder time because more of their games come against Western Conference opponents which, assuming again that the hype is correct and the West is more competitive, it would be more difficult to keep up with an elite 'East' team as far as winning percentage.

Of course, this is all theory and speculation, but if you believe the hype, then it would make sense that the Magic and Celtics would have a decent chance of staying in the top of the overall standings.

Makes sense. Maybe we would need to look at past years and see if there is a pattern of East elite teams being better in win %, but if last year is any indication, the best team was the Mavs.

Anyway, I think the Magic and the Celtics will prove better than last years Cavs, and they may as well surpass the Pistons and Heat of recent years. The Heat won a championship though...

Another way to check if the status is legit would be IMO to see how ORL and BOS matchup with the Spurs, Suns, Mavericks and Jazz, and other west teams as well, so we could see if they can handle those teams. ORL is not in a very good position right now having lost to Phx and SA, but we'll see how this develops until February, when ORL probably has played the best of the west.
