A Draft History

Recommended Posts

So Payton posted that most of the draftees in the last 10 years have been failures. This sentence intrigued me so I did a little digging. Here are the top 10 draft picks for the last 10 years.

The ones in bold are in my opinion the ones who have failed or are failing currently in their careers. I based that by looking at their stats and their draft status.

It seems like the theme has been that out of the top 10, 7 of them will be serviceable if not really good and three will be duds.

According to DraftExpress this morning this is the top 10 for the 2015 draft

Karl Towns

Jahlil Okafor

D'Angelo Russell

Emmanuel Mudiay

Mario Hezonja

Willie Cauley-Stein

Justise Winslow

Kristaps Porzingis

Stanley Johnson

Kelly Oubre

I don't see many potential duds in this top 10 except for maybe the bottom 3. I think everyone else will be serviceable and/or a success.

What do you think? Does the top 10 generate more duds than players?

You think Thomas Robinson, Derrick Williams, Anthony Bennett, Wes Johnson, Marvin Williams, Bargnani, etc were worth top 5 picks?

I think they're serviceable and not failures. Were they game changing players? No. But I would classify their careers as failures. Disappointments? Sure. But not failures. Also what we knew of them at the time, it made sense. Hindsight is always 20/20.

The only one of that list that I would consider calling a failed career so far is Thomas Robinson. But he is only 3-4 years in the league. I wanted to give him some more time. Same with Bennett.

They're failed draft picks. If Hennigan turned 2, 4, and 5 into Anthony Bennett, Wes Johnson, and Marvin Williams we'd be the worst team in the league and Hennigan would be kicked out of the league.

Williams is one that I looked at because I was about to put his name in bold, but he had like 8 years in a row where he averaged double digit scoring and hasn't shot below 42% for his career. I don't think that can be qualified as a failure. The jury is still out on Bennett, he started to play well toward the end of the season last year.

I agree with you about Wes Johnson.

I actually think WCS could be a great defensive player. But he'll probably always be the worst offensive player on the court for his team and he'll have trouble guarding the post against big bruising post players. If he gets with the right system and coach I could see him being an All Defensive team player at least once.

Greg Oden says hi haha

Greg Oden was the right pick. He is an injury bust, not a talent bust. IMO, those are 2 entirely different things. Anthony Bennett could and probably will go down as the worse #1 pick of all time.
