Sources: Wolves to fire Wittman if McHale will coach - ESPN

The Minnesota Timberwolves are on the brink of firing Randy Wittman after Saturday night's 23-point home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, according to NBA coaching sources.

But Wolves owner Glen Taylor, sources say, wants Timberwolves vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale to agree to take Wittman's place on the bench before going ahead with a coaching change.

It would be the NBA's fourth firing already this season, following dismissals in Oklahoma City (P.J. Carlesimo), Washington (Eddie Jordan) and Toronto (Sam Mitchell).

Yet it's believed that McHale is resistant to coaching again, even on an interim basis, despite the fact that Minnesota's much-maligned vice president of basketball operations has been successful as an interim coach before, guiding Minnesota to a 19-12 record in the second half of the 2004-05 season after firing Flip Saunders with the Wolves at 25-26.

Kevin McHale is too lazy to be a head coach.

He, like MJ, believes that his on-court career gives him a grandiose right to do as little as possible while holding a title that is as stupendous as possible.

The owner's attitude is pretty simple: "Hey, Bird's Boy, if you think you've assembled such a great team, YOU coach them. Otherwise, you can ride out on the same horse that Randy's saddling up."

Good idea by Taylor.

"Fail as the coach too, so then I have double the reason to fire you at the All Star break."

EDIT: This story was just confirmed on Sportscenter, and according to them Wittman's been fired and Kevin McHale will indeed step down as VP of b-ball operations to become Minnesota's head coach.

That's the big story here.

There are many mysteries in life some of which will never be answered.

One of them for me is how on Earth has Kevin McHale been able to keep his job all of these years. Its mind-boggling.

He was trained by Matt Millen.

Kevin McHale got his job in 1995, Matt Millen in 2001 so McHale actually trained Millen.
