Stats backing up Jameer as a scorer

When Jameer is scoring he doesn't have to be a great passer as they have to double team him and it leaves a good opportunity for a teammate as in being open. Our guys can hit open shots for the most part or alley oops. In the past almost everyone wanted Jameer to be a pass first point guard and that is not when he or our team is effective. When he looks for his shot our team is very, very tough to beat. Jameer has mad skills - I love watching other teams try to double team him when he takes the ball up the court - usually one of them will about fall down trying to guard him. I brought this up, because we now have even more fire power with VC and I don't want to see Jameer go into pass mode - that is not when he is at his best - he has done it in the past - taken himself out of the game and made himself an average no threat passer - I don't want to see it. He will get Vince his opportunities, but I would like to see Jameer go for 20 a night - I promise you if he averages 20 (I don't think he will) the Magic will be unstoppable. I think he could average higher than last year's 16.7, I think it was. He might come in around 18 a game, but I think he should average over 20 - 21 or 22 - preferably 22 a game and the Magic will be destroying teams and our other guys will be scoring plenty. Dwight would probably increase his average with that kind of scoring by Mighty Mouse. Jameer needs to score and the rest just happens - no deferring to VC or Rashard - if you see an opening take it and score. Jameer will get easy dish off passes when he is scoring.

Stats backing up Jameer as a scorer

Out of curiosity I checked some stats from last year on Jameer to see if stats backed up Knappy's claims on Jameer. Now, you know they will or else Knappy wouldn't have posted - actually Knappy would have posted either way. Most of you who know Knappy, well you know he thinks a lot of Jameer and he that this team does best when we have an aggressive scoring Jameer who is not defering - it doesn't mean he doesn't get people involved - it means he scores first - and as a result the Magic perform and other guys get easier looks. So, Knappy decided to look at the outcomes of games where Jameer scored 20 points or more. The results ... when Jameer scores 20 or more from the 2008 - 2009 season Record 13 wins .. 1 loss Assists 6.3 assists Turnovers 1.3 Based on the above stats it would support what Knappy has been saying - when Jameer scores he plays better all around and the Magic benefit. His assists are slightly higher than his season average I believe and his turnovers were low. Knappy has said before that he thinks Jameer's assists go up as he scores more. Knappy wants to see him play more like Chris Paul and keep the ball in his hands a little more and make things happen and definitely look for his shot. Stan needs to get on him and not let him be passive - Jameer needs to be an attacking machine and if he does it the Magic will be NBA champions with Howard, Carter, Lewis and cast. Interesting stats though when you look at them - so many people wanted Jameer to be a pass first point guard and when he has done that he is ineffective in my opinion - wasted talent when he doesn't try to dominate. It is so much easier for everyone when Jameer dominates. The biggest feature with those stats - the one I like most is the 13-1 record.
  4. I know this doesn't belong here, but it is the offseason - what ever happened to Carlos? Did anyone sign him - did he sign anywhere? There was all that speculation that he would be coming back to the NBA - any updates?

  6. quote: Originally posted by Kramer: quote: Originally posted by Tough Break There:So his logic on Jameer is, he's had an average season and a great one, I think he's an average player so lets expect him to be more like 05-06? Premier plays still in their prime rarely regress in the NBA. I think you aren't realizing just how incredible Jameer was. Let me ask you a question: is Jameer the best shooter in the NBA from anywhere but the paint? If you don't think he is then expect some faulter in his level of play because he was, for those few months, the best statistical shooter in the league. I do think Jameer is one of the top shooters in the league. Carlos would be close, but no one has signed him yet have they? Where is the run on Arroyo?
  7. quote: Originally posted by BakoMagic:why do people say we need a true point guard. Jameer has proved that he is a willing passer. I actually think he is underated as a passer. besides I never here that the spurs, the lakers or cavs need a true point guard. I would argue that jameer is equal to if not a better passer than T.parker, D. fisher, and mo will. You will be proven right - good comments - the only edit I would make is to remove D. Fisher - he is ok, but no where in the realm of Jameer talent. Jameer can play like Tony Parker, it is a question of whether he will or not and I think this season he will, he was finally starting to show it last season - before SVG, the problem was the Magic organization and Jameer trying to be a role player too much, now SVG is getting into his head and letting Jameer know that he needs to step it up and not disappear - he is way to talented to take himself out of the game - yes we have lots of other talent, but when other teams have to worry about Jameer they are toast.

  9. quote: Originally posted by ball junkie:Two ways to look at the Magic offseason overhaul: They messed with a formula that got them to the Finals for the first time in 14 years or they reloaded to improve their chances at finishing the job and winning a title this time around. Their chance of doing the latter probably will depend less on personnel upgrades and more on the maturation of Dwight Howard -- or the sudden evolution of Vince Carter -- into a bona fide leader. No team has ever won a championship without its best player leading the charge and those are Orlando's two candidates. Trending up: Ryan Anderson Last season: 13.63 PER 2009-10 projection: 15.50 PER Anderson was traded to Orlando as an extra in the Carter trade, and he got a bit of a raw deal on the exchange. Sure, he'll be on a playoff team, but he'll serve as the fifth big man in a four-man rotation, all of whom have been very durable thus far in their careers. He's too good to send down to the D-League, but he's not good enough to crack this lineup, and the result may end up being a wasted season on the pine for Anderson. That's a shame, though, because Anderson's ability to space the floor while defending opposing 4s should make him tailor-made for Orlando's system. So the Magic should take comfort in knowing that if injuries occur, he's likely to produce when called upon. --Hollinger Trending down: Jameer Nelson Last season: 20.67 PER 2009-10 projection: 18.81 PER It seems highly unlikely that Nelson will shoot so ridiculously well from middle and long ranges next season, and we should expect his numbers to regress to the mean as a result. He should continue to be an impact player, but one should look at his 2005-06 season as a barometer. Nelson's true shooting percentage (TS%) that year (56.7 percent) was nearly five points lower than last season's (61.2 percent), but he still averaged better than 20 points and six assists per 40 minutes. That's the type of season to expect from him this year, and it may be the difference between Orlando winning the title and losing in the Finals. --Hollinger Bucher's name to know: Jason Williams Word is that White Chocolate has become Creme Brulee, transformed by a year of retirement from an unorthodox piece of candy into the refined elder statesman of confection. Or, more simply: Jason Williams is all grown up. That, at least, is what the Magic say they've seen since signing him in late August. No longer is he focused on electrifying the crowd with an And-1 move, or nailing an oh-no-he-didn't 3, or proving that he's one of the elite talents in the league. They were pleasantly surprised by his level of conditioning when they worked him out, and he supposedly has been in their gym religiously ever since. Word also is that coach Stan Van Gundy pushed hard to get Williams, which makes sense. Williams was beloved by Pat Riley in Miami because of his basketball IQ and fearlessness at crunch time. SVG will never forget that Riley kicked him to the curb to coach a second championship team, but that doesn't mean they don't still value the same player attributes. The fact is, Williams gives the Magic an element they did not have last year -- a pure point guard who knows, as GM Otis Smith said, "how to get the ball to guys, not where they want it, but, where they should get it." If the year off alleviated his knee issues, and he's comfortable coming off the bench, Williams could provide some sorely needed, championship-proven leadership. --Bucher http://insider.espn.go.com/nba...ews/story?id=4481048 Knappy says, and I quote Knappy ... "Do not underestimate Jameer Nelson - never underestimate this guy. He finally has the right coach and he is acting as a leader - that is the only role he knows. Stan Van Gundy will not let him defer on offense - he will want an attacking, aggressive full Nelson - no half Nelson." Knappy further stated, and I quote ... "The only mild concern I have is that Jameer may back off a bit to accomodate Carter, but it should be only brief. An aggressive scoring Jameer does not diminish other players, it gives other players easier matchups and scoring opportunities. I estimate that Jameer's assists go up as his scoring goes up they are directly relational. When Jameer scores and takes over, like he can, but hasn't done enough in my opinion, he is to be feared. Teams, when Jameer is aggressive, have to double him and the Magic have too much fire power to double Jameer, Dwight and VC. It also is not wise to play off of Lewis although he really doesn't require a double team. Lewis can be a tough match up in the post for other teams one on one". Too find out more of what Knappy has to say, tune in as he has more to say (look at that a comment by Knappy and he didn't even say a word about BHill - nothing negative - it takes Knappy time to let it go, but he realizes that BHill can't hurt this team anymore and it is time for the healing to begin).

I think Gortat could demand an early first round pick at a minimum since he is a big that can play and is still very young. I would expect their lowest pick of the 3 or a first and something else - what do they have - a backup PG? I see him going to Houston and unless he is a monster I see the Magic moving him to not have to pay the luxury tax. The Magic would like to get a good player (draft pick) at a lower salary for 4 years and I think Gortat will be traded for a draft pick + or maybe Battier? We could use the trade exception for Battier and Gortat would be traded for a player around $3 million - not sure if we could get a 1st round draft pick as well - I don't see them doing that - Battier could be short term - I think he just has 2 years left on his contract - can't remember. It will be interesting to see

ESPN's final Summer Forcast: NBA Champions

quote: Originally posted by You're Fat, Pat!:http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/...dictions09-NBAChamps quote: Orlando Magic (3 votes)And here's the case for the defending Eastern Conference champs to win it all: A lot of folks are focused on the Hedo Turkoglu-Vince Carter "swap." Since you can argue that one in either direction, let's call it a draw. So now you have a team that went to the Finals without its All-Star point guard, who has returned to join VC in the backcourt, with an improving superstar in the middle, a tough new power forward in Brandon Bass, an All-Star forward in Rashard Lewis, a driven coach in Stan Van Gundy, and a deep roster all around. And they'll be extremely motivated by personal and team goals to finish the job this season. What's not to like? _________________ Orlando, of course. Take the league's best defense, subtract the overrated Hedo Turkoglu and add Vince Carter to a lineup that already had three All-Stars, and what do you have? A team that's ready to handle Boston (again) and Cleveland (again) and get past a somewhat aging Lakers team (to whom the Magic gave away two Finals games in June). What 3 guys got it right? If they counted Knappy's bold vote it would be 4. I like the comments on Orlando - the 2nd part with the over-rated Hedo comment - Hedo is decent, but way over-rated. VC is a big upgrade and we have our all star PG who will be better and Dwight who will be better and Bass and Barnes - a tough team. Now, the Lakers will be tough. Cleveland - Shaq isn't going to help them. Boston, is aging a bit, but they got better with Wallace and Daniels. I think the Magic come out of the east beating Boston - Cleveland finishes 3rd in the East. Spurs will do ok, but I think they are over-rated coming into the season, I think there best has past. Still good, but the major 3 I see with the best chance - LA, then Orlando, then Boston. LA has more experience so I think they get rated 1, but I do think the Magic will end up NBA champions this upcoming season.

My other suggestion would be for Golden State to sign Arroyo, then we give them Gortat, Lewis, Nelson and VC so that we can team up the great Arroyo with Howard - they would each score over 50 a night and you could throw in CJ - either way.

Jajajajajajajaja Actually, Knappy says ... as long as Jameer does not defer to Vince Carter and Jameer just plays his game and gets Carter involved ... Knappy says Jameer will again be an allstar point guard this season. My only concern and I really hope Jameer has matured enough not to do it - is that Jameer deferred to guys in the past - Grant Hill in particular, which was a huge mistake to do that and Steve Francis when he was just coming into the league. Then Jameer's growth was stunted with Brian Hill trying to turn him into a feeder of Dwight and only a feeder of Dwight. If Brian Hill never came to Orlando, Jameer would probably be at least 6'3" in play. Now, if Jameer does not defer to VC and Stan gets him to play aggressive - he will actually play in the allstar game this year. There is a chance Jameer won't make it (I think him not making it is slim) - I would hate to see that - the only way he doesn't make it is 1) he defers to VC, 2) his injury plagues him (I'm not seeing this) or he gets reinjured (I'm not seeing this as he is kind of a tank and I think last season's injury was a fluke). Knappy says Jameer - 2nd time being voted to the allstar game. Knappy predicted at least 3 all star appearances and was ridiculed years ago when Knappy said it would happen ... it is kind of like the phrase don't tempt mother nature ... don't question Knappy's predictions - I think 3 seasons in a row Knappy predicts the Magic's wins within 1 game - saying it would be within a range of 2 games and it was as Knappy couldn't say whether they would be looking to win the last few games or not. And, while I'm at it - Knappy say over 60 wins this season with this team. Knappy is going for 62 wins - that is a huge, bold statement as it is very difficult to win over 60 games.

I like him better than Arroyo for sure, but if Jameer went down we would be in trouble, but even a better backup would still be trouble. So, hopefully, Jameer is healthy all season - he seems durable. I just don't see a lot of trade value in AJ - he can be a decent backup, but I don't see a run being made at him by a slew of teams.
