After reading Howard Mass article above and studying my breakdown you can better understand what is going on and why Otis is in a self imposed box.

Why we didn't manuever to grab a 2nd round pick last night? I hope that's not what you're speaking about with reference to Howard Mass' article.

 

2nd round picks aren't guaranteed, and in the event a team were to guarantee a contract, doubling a $700,000 contract (the effect of going over the cap) to keep a player that you know can contribute isn't a bad move.

WHY?....relates to Otis' inactions and not doing more. I am not endorsing Howard Mass' trust in Otis belief. I personally think Otis is dealing with a self imposed problem trying to stay under the Luxury tax.

 

Do I like it? NO!! Do I understand what he is doing? Sort of, but I don't agree with his assessment of players any more than you do.

 

Is Otis expecting to sign Maggette with the full MLE and fully expects to be over the Luxury tax this year? I don't know. Is Otis paying Nelson more than 5.6m the first year? Could be. The problem is lack of available MONEY.

 

ADDITIONALLY:

As you said, when exceeding the Luxury tax level 700,000 becomes 1,400,000....

 

AND Turkoglu's new contract next year will cost a min of +3.5m.

I agree that Otis has a salary problem but him not getting another draft pick had to do with the fact that SVG only uses a 9 rotations so why pay a guy to sit on the bench?

I can't argue your point or that Smack thinks we blew it by not drafting another big. Both reasoning valid. No argument here. What Otis thinks? Another matter.
