If people actually went through and read words as individual letters I could understand that argument, but I've never known anyone who took hours to read several pages of text so I don't think anyone reads that way. I'm pretty sure this probably started out as a chain e-mail type of thing by high schoolers and trickled down through the telephone game to become the version people see it as now.
