ESPN Needs a Better Fact Checker

Couple of items I noticed while browsing ESPN.com's headlines just now:

  • Hawks Coach Woodson, while railing away at the fact that Al Horford was snubbed in the ROY voting made mention of the fact that no power forward/center had come into the league in "I don't know how many years" and done what Horford done this season. Certainly Horford had an exceptional year, nearly averaging a double-double. But surely Woodson hasn't forgotten that just four seasons ago, a rookie forward/center actually DID average a double-double and didn't even sniff the ROY award. Yes, I'm talking about Dwight Howard. He didn't win because another rookie was also averaging a double-double, Emeka Okafor. And just two years before that, Yao Ming averaged 13/8/2 and also didn't win. That was because another rookie power forward/center was averaging similar numbers and winning the award (Stoudemire). Here's the link: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3377015

  • In this article in which George Karl talks about how he will be tougher on the Nuggets, it is reported that the Nuggets are the first 50-win team in NBA history to get "whitewashed" in the postseason. While I have no frickin clue exactly what whitewashed means, I assume it means swept in the first round. Well, although it pains me to admit it, I remember a certain Magic team in 1994 that won 50 games and also got swept out in the first round and that Magic team actually had homecourt advantage!!
