2016-2017 Season Discussion Thread

I disagree. I think squeaking into the playoffs is fine -- playoff basketball is necessary for young talent to develop and become hungrier for next season. Losing stunts development. Getting there also makes us more respectable in FA

Not when the youth of your team is riding the pine they aren't learning much. And 8 seeds are not drawing big free agents.

eh, an 8 seed you can at least bring to a meeting the "we're one player away and you're that player" pitch.

Can you give examples of 7 or 8 seeds getting that? It's a nice idea not sure if that's reality. And as of right now our vets with exception of ibaka, are not leading us to even an 8 seed.

its hard to find any the last 5 years because most examples are Houston (which had a complete but underachieving team) and Dallas (I think their "look, we won a title in recent memory" pitch was better). I also ignored most western conference years because a 50 win 8th seed isn't the same thing as a 40-42 team. but here's a few:

the 10-11 pacers getting the 8th seed, the following year signing david west.

the 08-09 pistons used that method to sign ben Gordon and Charlie vilanueva. they just turned into bad players.

07-08 philly signed Elton brand the following season. Brand at the time was still a commodity.

we got rashard lewis in 06-07

05-06 Chicago got ben Wallace

If our hope is to attract a top free agent this coming summer, we are set for serious disappointment. Payton4thewin, weren't you supporting Henny with the trade of Harris because it would give us the opportunity to sign two max free agents this past summer. How did that work out? Furthermore, you seem to be contradicting your own recent comments about the best way to achieve sustainable success is through drafting. So which direction do you want?

the best way to achieve sustainable success is through drafting.

This franchise/fanbase doesn't have the stomach for that based on the moves we made

Where we're at, we're too good to tank. What if Vogel doesn't want to tank? What if vogel is too good of a coach to tank and he can pull any team to 33 wins or so.

We have a roster with some level of talent and one player we have some hope for significant improvement. We don't need to hope for an elite player in free agency. we just hope for a third tier point guard that can push us from a 7-10 seed to a 4-7 seed. then we use that success and accumulation of assets to push for a bigger trade later like Houston did with Harden. That's the path now. Unless the franchise/fanbase suddenly finds multiple 18-22 win seasons palatable when they didn't find a mid 20's season palatable two years ago.
