Magic search for ways to stop Hawks perimeter game

Recommended Posts

or dump to dwight to initiate offense. Dwight immediately kicks it out. Pass the ball around...

Dwight having the ball works the same as a perimeter player penetrating or a pick and roll. The defense adjusts to help (even when they aren't coming on a double they float toward the paint) somebody should be exploitable.

Yep but this is only gonna work if the other guys move instead of camp around.

yeah, run a princeton-ish type of offense.

Pass to dwight, screen for the initial passer, Dwight kicks it to guy cutting off the screen.

I'm sorry, but this isn't rocket science. Any time Stan/Jameer/etc. actually bothered to run pick and roll, ATL couldn't do ANYTHING about it. Also a back screen or six for J-Rich or JJ wouldn't kill anybody, either.

Magic ran several plays for JRich, but they only worked the two times he actually came off hard from the screen and curled (in which he got an easy layup) and when he came hard and faded (open shot, but missed). Most of the other times he just ran through the motion because the play always ends up with Dwight in the post, it was almost like he didn't want to get the ball and just jogged through the screen so that Dwight could get the ball.

As far as Meer going off, that had a lot to do with Hinrich being on the bench (the same reason Arenas had some good plays in the 2nd, no Hinrich guarding either).

The offense isn't that bad, ATL shooting over 50% is. If their mentality is to outscore the opponent as opposed to stopping the opponent, they're not going to win anything.

With that said, Hedo does need to be more aggressive offensively. The amount of open looks and somewhat contested (that he takes anyways) in which he gave up on were far too many.

To be fair, the Magic have gotten worse defensively on the perimeter and the Hawks have actually changed their offensive scheme from last year. The Magic have to constantly double team someone whether it's Horford at the four, Smith at the 3, or JJ at the 2. They're also putting Jameer in pick and rolls.

Any time you run this for 30+ minutes, it's going to be hard to keep them under say, 45% for a game.

It'll be interesting to see what Gundy has defensively.

As for offense, I agree with the changes those who said to make to more pick and rolls or make some plays to involve others in the offense and not just dumping Dwight the ball.
