Pat Garrity was a pre-med major at Notre Dame and was an Academic All-American. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks with the 19th pick in the 1998 NBA Draft. He was traded along with the draft rights for Dirk Nowitski to Dallas on June 24, 1998. He was subsequently traded to Pheonix where he played his rookie campaign. Orlando acquired Pat Garrity in August 1999 as part of a package for Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway. He had his 4th year option picked up by Orlando in 2000 and signed a contract extension with Orlando in July 2002.
