I’ve got to say I disagree with this article and the other article this gentleman wrote about off-season goals. For instance, he harps on saying that waiting on trading vets will only decrease their value. Historically and contextually, that just not true. Using Evan as an example, he was terrible in the playoffs and has a low value right now. The best thing we can do is hope he ups his value and then move him.

One other thing he gives no account for is the potential outside shooting and scoring of Cole and Chuma. They both are rookies but honestly have unlimited upside. Practically speaking, we are adding two rookies to the mix and that’s worth noting.

Both first round picks, with high upside.

I am thinking more around the 10, if I look at the East this is my prediction with some positions perhaps swapped and remaining signings.

    1. Bucks

    2. Celtics

    3. Nets

    4. Heat

    5. 76ers

    6. Pacers

    7. Raptors

    8. Hornets

    9. Hawks

    10. Magic

    11. Wizards

I don't think the Hornets will be better than us

We didn’t resign MCW to be 3rd string PG.

I think our 10 man rotation (I know Cliff likes 9, but with the modified season if goes to 10)  is something like this:

    Fultz/Cole

    Evan/MCW

    Ennis/Ross

    AG/Chuma

    Vuch/Bamba

with Birch and Aminu out of the rotation until injuries happen.

I think we chose mcw because he can fills multiple roles.

Clark may challenge Ennis to start. I see him playing well next to Gordon.

Man I see every other East team get better this offseason and we are still in the mediocre range. I dont think we are going to make the 8 this year, Hornets and Hawks will get there before us. Also if the Wizards either keep Wall or trade him for some decent assets will beat us. Not trying to be negative but we have not really done anything different, I like our Rookies but unless they have an amazing season we are not going to compete.

There is a play in this year as well. 7-10. I believe

I've actually been in that exact situation. I kept searching until I found a way to trade it in for one that I did not like near as much but I could depend on to get me to work and back EVERY day. The car that I loved so much had a lot of miles and actually died the same week I traded it in. After 1 year I was able to trade the car I didn't like as much for 1 that I really loved :D
Using that comparison with the Isaac new contract situation we will have the choice on how much to offer. Based on his health issues I would NOT give him a big contract. He is a great player but very injury prone. You have to wonder which injury is going to end his career? The next one, the one after that? Too much of a gamble for me. I would rather have someone not quite as good but much more durable than pay him a lot to play 40% of the time.

I understand your position. I think we hold on to him 3 more years before leaving the situation. The Gordon trade talks hint to that thinking by management. I think back to curry's earlier years. He was always injured. What if the warriors gave up too early? I don't see this management team moving quickly. Look at fultz, they take the long road.

So barring any trades, this is pretty much our team for next season:

    PG) Fultz/Anthonly/Carter-Williams

    SG) Fournier/Ross/Bacon

    SF) Ennis/Okeke/Isaac(i)

    PF) Gordon/Aminu/Clark

    C) Vucevic/Bamba/Birch

We have reportedly signed Kasim Mane to a 2-way contract, so we have one more of those to fill. My guess would be BJ Johnson might get that, but we will see.  Guesstimating that Ennis is going to get $3 - 3.5M, and that MCW is going to get $4 -4.5M, that puts us between $1.5 -2.5M under the luxury tax threshold.

I know that the team has applied for an injured player exception of about $3.68M for Isaac, but unless they make a trade to open up space under the tax-line, I don't see them using it. The fact that they have applied for it at all does indicate to me that there may still be some talks going on to make a trade; and they want that extra exception if it comes about. I would guess something where we would be sending out two players, but only getting one back, and cutting $2 - 2.5M in salary would open up both a roster space and luxury tax-line space to use the $3.68M injured player exception. (Edit) Sending out one player for a future draft pick would also work - maybe Khem Birch to Detroit - I hear they are collecting centers right now? Seriously though, someone in the market for a cheap, serviceable backup center might be interested in Khem.

I'm not sure how much of the MLE is still available, as I'm not sure if re-signing MCW, Ennis, or Clark counted against it. I think MCW and Ennis might, but I don't think Clark does, as he was a restricted free agent and we did make his qualifying offer.

it is always good to have a 4th pg for the 2 way. especially with to pgs with injury history.

If you desperately needed a car, would you be OK with buying one that has a track record of being broken down more than half the time but runs amazing the rest of the time?

I think that is the wrong scenario. If you spent a lot of money on a car. It is your favorite car and you can not offered a new one. Plus, you are not in a position to acquire a different one. What do you do?

I’m fairly certain that if we extend Isaac now, we would not be able to get insurance on his contract. Someone can check me on that.

preexisting conditions is not something that indemnity companies want. The assurances we would have to be written into the salaried contract via bonus on games  played and mins.

Well, including the playoffs since we drafted JI he’s played 141 games. Assuming he misses the entire season this year, we will have played a total of 328 games since drafting him. So, that’s 44% of games played during his rookie contract. He has no leverage at all at this point. It’s not even like he had an injured start and made it back and looked healthy, he’s had different injuries repeatedly. I’m extremely hesitant to offer him anything.

I agree. The issue is that the talent is undeniable, and we are deprived of talent.

  11. 12 minutes ago, All Eyes On Me said:

Yeah, I could see a 1 + 1 with a team option at like $12 - $15 mill a year being settling ground for JI. No idea either about Markelle

I think the lower the term the higher the dollar amount we pay. Therefore, if we put a 1 + 1 team option. It would probably be 17 or higher mil per year. If we do 12- 15 mil. It would be a longer term like 3 or 4 years with a player option. His signing will be tricky because the most important thing a player provides is availability and he has not provided that to us. He has the most talent on the team, but if he cant stay on the court; it is pointless. The magic should learn from our past experience with grant hill. They better not break the bank on Isaac, without him showing signs of being available. No matter how much I like Isaac, if I am honest, his injuries has cost us since he has been on the team. A healthy Isaac would have changed the trajectory of past seasons and playoffs. As of now, we can not count on Isaac.

Even if all that ends up being true, unless Fultz is the best player in the league (he isn’t) it still isn’t a team that can actually compete for a championship.

But it would encourage free agents to come and make us exciting. It would be the first major building block. Therefore, it would give a true foundation to build on.

Excellent post, well thought out and expressed.  I would have added a plus one if I hadn’t already used up all of mine.  I do have the following questions/comments:

    1.  Why did you put Clark in the “guys who can shoot” category?   He was a mediocre shooter last year.

    2.  One of the knocks on Vuch is that he’s relatively slow (because of his size, not an effort thing) and that for him to be effective, the offense has to run through him.  How does that help Fultz?   I would think it would hinder him.

    3. I didn’t understand the Duncan Robinson comment above.  Did he actually come from a tree?

    1) Clark can shoot, he needs more minutes to stay in rhythm. You could see it in the playoffs when we were forced to stay with him.

    2) Vuc helps fultz in the halfcourt with pick and pop. He has great hands and finishes on pick roll. Plus, he can hit 3s for spacing.

    3) He is saying that shooters with good size are hard to come by...

A fast start can really help this team. They need confidence. Health, development, aggressive Fultz and some of our players starting the year hot. Let's face it, two of the last 3 years the whole team was ice cold. And the one hot year it only lasted 15 games. Then I'll be excited.

If we squeak into an eighth seed and Fultz and Bamba still look like rookies it will be depressing. Always the chance Chuma, Cole or maybe even Bacon explodes. That would be exciting.

I do want to see what okeke can do. Gordon could do more if we feature him in the offense more.

CTMagicUK, as you know we're not on the same page, I'm not going to repeat my usual arguments again, but I have to say: it's a pleasure to discuss with you and read your points (will give a +1), even if I don't agree with a few of them. I obviously ALWAYS hope that all of you guys that are happy with the direction of the franchise are right, and that I'm completely wrong.

The direction of the team is on the backs of fultz and isaac. Isaac going down over and over has been the difference in multiple season - including last year.. If that doesn't change, we are in a bad place. If fultz become aggressive watch out. If fultz stays passive like last year,  it will be same story.

I like fultz. He has the tools to take us places but I don't know if he has the mindset. Management needs to give this man the keys and see were we end up. We need to max out fultz usage.

Sure, if you live in a world where you can only watch Magic basketball it’s too early to judge... also, I’m highly skeptical on Clark filling any sort of need. He probably only makes the rotation if we have an injury... or, Cliff plays him over Chuma cause that’s how Cliff rolls

I think he earned more minutes with his play in the playoffs. I also believe that is the reason he is back and signed for 2 years.

Same old team. Really the only reason to watch is to see if Fultz makes the jump. That's it, the only draw. Some of you might say Bamba or Cole. I do not expect either to play much the first 2 months, and i doubt they look good. I mean i want them too but if they do it'll be in the second half. Maybe they finally get off to a quick start, if not i'm getting a Tampa Bay Raptors Jersey.

Below is a little joke song i made up about Dwight. It's mine, i didn't copy it from redditt.

Even with DJ's mins, I think cole will have an impact. He fit a playmaker and scoring need. He has been groomed for the league and loves the game.

Sure. So do I. But we don't have the space for impactful free agent moves. Any impactful move we make wasn't going to come in free agency and the moves we did make have no negative impact on us making an impactful move via trade now or at the deadline.

Me and you know that bit, but that is why I  believe you see the comments.

Got to say it's pretty funny seeing Magic fans melt down (not really on here) over giving James Ennis a 1 year deal...

It's such an inconsequential move with no long term ramifications.

And the same goes for Bacon. These are small rotation moves that only impact this year why are people stressing?

They just want impactful moves and better than 1st round exit in the playoff. I understand. The moves don't move the nettle for them.
