``The draft is such that there are going to be good players available for awhile,’’ Hennigan said. ``That’s a positive thing for us and it’s our job to figure out who that right fit is for our team and our roster. … I’d be lying if I said we didn’t want the No. 1 pick. But it’s not deflating. This is where we’re sitting and where we’re picking and we have to make the most of our situation.’’

Orlando Magic executives and Magic fans didn’t want to hear these words from the NBA’s deputy commissioner, Mark Tatum. “And the fourth pick in the 2014 NBA Draft goes to . . .,” Tatum said, pausing as he opened an envelope. “The Orlando Magic.” But Tatum did say those words — and he said them when they mattered most, during Tuesday night’s 2014 NBA Draft Lottery in midtown Manhattan. The Magic now have to face the reality that they likely won’t be in a position to select Kansas swingman Andrew Wiggins, Duke swingman Jabari Parker or Kansas center Joel Embiid when the draft arrives on June 26. “I think we would’ve liked to have gotten the highest pick possible,” Magic general manager Rob Hennigan said after the ceremony ended. “I think every team in this situation would’ve preferred that. But we’re happy with the fourth pick. We feel like we can get a good player, and we’ve got our work cut out for us to figure out who that is.” Most likely, the Magic will have to choose from Australian point guard Dante Exum, Arizona power forward Aaron Gordon, Kentucky power forward Julius Randle, Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart, Indiana big man Noah Vonleh and Croatian forward Dario Saric. In addition to the fourth pick, the Magic also received the 12th overall pick, a byproduct of their Aug. 2012 trade that sent Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Magic may attempt to package their two first-round picks, and perhaps a player or two already on their roster, for the chance to move into the top three in the upcoming draft. But if Orlando can’t make a deal, they’ll be at the mercy of the three other teams slated to pick ahead of them: the Cleveland Cavaliers, who’ll pick first; the Milwaukee Bucks, who’ll pick second; and the Philadelphia 76ers, who’ll pick third. The Cavaliers won the lottery for the third time in four years. The announcement that Cleveland had won Tuesday’s lottery prompted the Cavaliers’ new general manager, David Griffin, to clap his hands. Magic front-office executives have to be disappointed with the result. In an effort to secure a top pick, the franchise built a roster that posted a 23-59 record this past season. The Magic entered the lottery with the third-best odds of winning the top pick: 15.6 percent. They had a 15.7 percent probability of receiving the second pick, a 15.6 percent chance of obtaining the third pick, a 22.6 percent probability of getting the fourth pick, a 26.5 percent chance of picking up the fifth pick and a 4.0 percent probability of taking home the sixth pick. “I think everybody in the room wants to get No. 1,” Magic CEO Alex Martins said afterward. “You just watch each one of those logos get opened up in the envelopes and you hope that your name’s not there until No. 1. But the good news is that it wasn’t there at five or six, either. Number 4 will be a very talented player coupled with another very talented player at No. 12.” Embiid missed the end of Kansas’ season with a back injury, and there are questions about whether he has healed fully. Embiid didn’t attend last week’s draft combine, where players receive extensive medical testing. If teams have concerns about his back as the draft approaches, the top tier of players could shrink from three to two, and Embiid possibly could fall to Orlando at No. 4. “We’ll have to really understand exactly what all the medical conditions are for these players, and certainly we’ll have to feel comfortable with the medical condition of any player,” Hennigan said. via orlando sentinal

Kings put No. 8 pick on trading block SACRAMENTO -- The Kings put the No. 8 pick in the draft on the trade block immediately after the lottery Tuesday night, league sources told NBA.com, clearly looking to add at least one impact veteran in an attempt to push into the playoff conversation next season rather than wait for another rookie prospect to develop. While several teams choosing in the top 10 on June 26 will be fielding trade offers as part of a deep draft with several intriguing prospects, the Kings have signaled they will take a proactive approach in hoping to make a deal. It is the same aggressive stance the team took early in 2013-14, before the new front office headed by owner Vivek Ranadive and general manager Pete D'Alessandro made two moves, including acquiring Rudy Gay from Toronto in the kind of bold strike Sacramento would like to emulate with a valuable draft pick as bait. The Kings have several needs in the aftermath of the 28-54 finish, most notably an upgrade on defense, adding dependable perimeter shooting and finding a playmaker point guard, whether or not Isaiah Thomas returns as a restricted free agent. Those could be addressed at No. 8 in the draft, but with the possibility of the kind of test of patience they just went through with Ben McLemore, the seventh pick in 2013. It was immediately unclear if the Kings have a specific target. But Dennis Schroder, the German point guard firmly behind Jeff Teague on the Hawks depth chart, could come up. Had McLemore been gone at No. 7, Sacramento would have looked hard at Schroder or at trading back. via nba.com

The Orlando Magic are stocked in the front court, so a top overall pick might seem like a no-brainer: take a point guard; but the word from Orlando is they will draft the best possible player regardless of position. There has been a sense for a while that Orlando likes Parker and after the Draft Combine there is a sense that Exum is on their radar as well. The Magic will give Wiggins a long look because some believe he could play off-guard at the next level and a Wiggins – Victor Oladipo backcourt could be crazy good. The Magic could be a dark horse team on Embiid simply because they have a ton of young bigs on rookie scale contracts and could be patient with Embiid’s back and development, but he would have to clear his medical with flying colors to be a real option in Orlando, especially when you factor in that the Magic really don’t need a center unless they come out of the process believing Embiid is the player long term of the bunch. via hoopsworld

“I see myself as a point guard,” Exum said. “I’ve always played the point guard position, so that’s where I feel comfortable. That’s what I’m entering myself as into the draft, and that’s where I see myself playing. … Most teams looking at me are trying to look at a two point guard set-up, where they can get it to the point guards and they can run the show.” i wonder if we will look at the 2 pg set up. exum n oladipo......

Magic Extend Contracts of General Manager Rob Hennigan and Head Coach Jacque Vaughn... The Orlando Magic have exercised their fourth-year team option and extended the contracts of General Manager Rob Hennigan and Head Coach Jacque Vaughn, Chief Executive Officer Alex Martins announced today. Both contracts have been extended through the 2015-16 season. Per team policy, terms of the deal are not disclosed. "Rob (Hennigan) and Jacque (Vaughn) have worked extremely hard in establishing a culture which embodies teamwork, hard work, hunger for success and humility," said Martins. "With their strategic direction and leadership, we feel we are headed in the right direction, which will allow us to achieve our goals of contending in a long-term, sustainable fashion." Hennigan was named general manager of the Magic on June 20, 2012. He is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the team’s basketball operations, including day-to-day business, roster management and development, player acquisitions, salary cap management, analytical systems, and process development throughout the department. Hennigan spent the previous four seasons (2008-12) with Oklahoma City, including his last two seasons as the Thunder’s assistant general manager/player personnel. Vaughn became the tenth head coach in Orlando Magic history on July 27, 2012. He is the second-youngest head coach in the NBA. Prior to joining the Magic, Vaughn spent two seasons (2010-12) as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs. He played 12 years in the NBA from 1997-2009, including 80 games with Orlando in 2002-03. Vaughn was a member of the San Antonio Spurs 2006-07 NBA Championship team.
