Although the Magic are locked into the No. 2 playoff seeding in the Eastern Conference, it's the Lakers in the West, with the identical record (56-23) who are providing the incentive to keep pushing through the regular season. The only reason it would matter is if they meet again in the NBA Finals, where the team with the better record would have home-court advantage. A year ago, the Lakers with the home court, beat the Magic in the Finals. "If we ever get there -- and it's a long way to go -- but I'd hate to be sitting there in the Finals going, 'We could have had a shot at this if I didn't rest so-and-so for no (good) reason,'" coach Stan Van Gundy said. "I'm not saying we'll get there, but if we do, I want every advantage and I think that's a lot more important than giving a guy a night off." Van Gundy was referring to why he hasn't started giving Dwight Howard a night off, much like the Cavaliers and Lakers have done with LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. Both Howard and Van Gundy said that they expect Howard to play all 82 games this season for the fifth time in the last six years. "I'm not jealous. Those guys (Bryant and James) can rest, but I'm going to continue to play," said Howard after getting 25 points and 13 rebounds in an easy victory over the Knicks on Friday night. Game Thread Sign Up Sheet #7 (Last 10 Games Regular Season)

Gosh...darn! My game thread lost this game today against the Cavs. Right, "Rally Caps"?

I see this being a very uncharacteristic game for the end of the season with possible main players resting and magic players not resting...playing down to the competition might factor in. Hoping we destroy them by 20+ if lebron is sitting. Thanks, MagicDelight. **********

It's not what he wants. Howard is on the verge of becoming the first player in history to lead the NBA in both rebounding and blocked shots in consecutive seasons, just another reminder of how good a defensive player he has become. (Of course, the NBA began tracking blocked shots in the 1973-74 season, following the retirements of Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell. Chamberlain led the league in rebounding in 11 seasons, while Russell led in four seasons). Howard is averaging 13.4 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots. He led the league last season by averaging 13.8 rebounds and 2.9 blocks. The Magic (51-22) return to play Sunday at home against the Denver Nuggets. "It's really unbelievable," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "He's so far in front of everybody. He's just the dominant guy in the league in those two categories." David Lee is second in rebounding, averaging 11.9 per game. Andrew Bogut is second in blocks, averaging 2.5 per game. "The individual accomplishments are great, but I just want to win a championship," Howard said. "Twenty years from now, I'll look back and be happy about breaking records, but I just want to win a championship." Howard also is leading the league in field goal percentage (.610) and technical fouls (15). MAGIC 106, TIMBERWOLVES 97: Dwight Howard had 24 points, 19 rebounds and four blocked shots, leading the Magic to another easy victory. They never trailed in the second half, holding a 51-39 rebounds advantage. The Magic hit 13 of 36 shots from three-point range. Their paths since have been radically different. When the two teams meet Friday in Orlando -- 20 seasons after coming into the league together -- they find themselves in dramatically different spots. The Magic are contenders, hoping for their third trip to the NBA Finals. The Timberwolves are struggling, much like they were during their inaugural season. The Timberwolves have been beyond the first round of the playoffs just once, losing in the Western Conference final of 2004. The Magic, blessed by centers like Shaquille O'Neal and Dwight Howard, are expecting to get past the first round for the fifth time this spring. The Magic (50-22) are expecting to be contenders for the next decade, or as long as Howard stays healthy and in Orlando. The Timberwolves (14-58) once again are looking to retool this summer. The Magic have beaten the Wolves the last three meetings. They won earlier this season in Minnesota when Rashard Lewis had 21 points and Matt Barnes 17. HAWKS 86, MAGIC 84: Josh Smith dunked in a follow shot at the buzzer, beating the Magic for the first time this season. Vince Carter had tied the game with a three-pointer with nine seconds remaining, setting up Smith's heroics. When Joe Johnson missed an off-balance shot, Smith converted the miss when no one blocked him off the boards. Dwight Howard had 19 points, 24 rebounds and four blocked shots. Johnson led the Hawks with 17 points. Quote To Note: "Our guys on the floor were doing the same thing as the guys on the bench. They were just watching."
