As others have stated, to insist on getting more was risking getting nothing at all. Hollinger acts like the Magic HAD to be involved in the deal. It obviously helped, but the other teams could have still worked out their other plans and left the Magic out completely. The only possible negative impact I see is that they now can be a player in going after Barnes. If Otis was interested in him, the asking price might have just gone up. Personally, I'm not going to lose any sleep over whether or not Matt Barnes is on the Magic roster. Regardless, we can get a player a whole lot better than Barnes or Bass with $8M when the teams that want to play in next years FA game have to dump more salary now that the salary cap for next year has been reduced so significantly. That's not exactly true. We are the only team that could actually sign and trade Hedo to Toronto, so they had to involve us to get the deal done. A future pick would have been ideal but the trade exeption is still a really nice insurance policy in case we need to make a deal down the road. besides, is anyone really that afraid of Toronto? We may have let them off the hook a bit, but we also added tremendous trade flexibility by participating in the deal. Toronto just F'd up by paying Hedo 10 mill for the next 5 years... I'm not afraid of them. They have the softest front line in the league, and absolutely nobody that can defend D12. They will play Suns ball next year and give up 115 ppg. I see them as a 6 seed or lower.

I am one of the few that has defended Otis on this board when many have attacked him for trivial matters..such as not signing Crittenton last year..lol. I never see any posts about that guy anymore..kind of wild how that works. From what I am hearing, it sounds like Bass for 3.5-4 and then hopefully Ratliff and Barnes. Plus I would like to see us add Kasib and Richard from the Summer League. Our team will be BETTER then last years. I believe that Vince will bring more to the table then Hedo did. We have 3 4th quarter guys..Jameer is the one everyone forgets about, but he has always made huge shots. Vince is obviously the 1st option..and then we have Mr. Lewis who basically won us some playoff games with his nasty clutch shooting. Once again, Otis has done great work so far. Agree 100%
  3. quote: Originally posted by Nyce_1:I think after they fill out their roster, Colangelo beat Otis this summer. That team will be serious with the right pieces. Nah. They will be a playoff team but they went from soft to supersoft with Hedo replacing Marion. Their starting 5 will score a ton of points, but they are no where near as complete and talented as ours is, especially if we get Bass. Also, they don't have anybody close to Pietrus coming off their bench.

I don't think Toronto is going to add that much salary. They just gave Bargnani an extension, signed Hedo to a fat contract, and took on some dallas players for the coming year. They were just looking to add some cheap depth.
  5. Denton will be missed. All the other stuff sounds great. I think Barnes fits the team well and can backup up two positions and start if needed. I hope Otis doesn't mess the Bass situation up. Also, Ratliff would be perfect as the backup center. He can defend the paint and rebound effectively for 10-12 min.

The Magic trade JJ Redick, rights to Franny and the trade exception to the Utah Jazz for Carlos Boozer You can't package the TPE with other players. It has to be a straight up deal. Also, the other guys are right, Boozer makes too much money for the TPE that we will get for Hedo. I believe Boozer is due something like 12.7 mil next year, and we are prob looking at a 10.5 mill TPE.

I wonder if we are allowed to split the TPE. Say we 4-5 million of it to pick up Bass and then the rest some other time, or do we have to use it all at once.

ESPN says that they don't know all the details yet. Wow this could be huge! Otis obviously got the green light to pick up another big salary or else there would be no point to this trade for us. We would only be helping Toronto and Hedo out.

    nice!, I want details.
  12. I think Powell and Hendrix deserve a chance in training camp. Hendrix prob has the best shot at making the team though.
  13. I would take Kasib Powell over Richardson, and I hope Hendrix is kept.

what will Turk be like in years 3 - 5????

quote: Originally posted by Do Work Stan .... BOOYAAKASHAA:I hate to see the catfish leave town however I would not trust signing him to a 5 year deal. I think Turk has a less than average work ethic and as he gets a little bit older I think this will take more of a toll on his game and his production. Lets not forget that Turk was missing quite a few games the year before last for tick tack injuries and some unknown illness that would reappear after a long night out on the town (hangover). No but seriously, I question Turks commitment to the game and although he is and has been a great player for Orlando I really think once he cashes in on the big pay day there is a chance he could begin to shut it down. Exactly why it was such a good move to get VC and not be forced to pay Hedo 10 mill plus for the next 5 years.

Magic interested in Matt Barnes? (Link)

quote: Originally posted by magicfan83: quote: Originally posted by Nyce_1:if we get Bass, Barnes, and Ratliff, I'll be happy. Throw in a re-signed Gortat, dam..... If I'm Otis, this is my plan. Unless Toronto would agree to a sign-and-traded Hedo for a 1st round pick and a fat TE, for the ability to keep the rights to their FAs and the MLE. Then you gotta figure, if Toronto renounces, Dallas might throw their MLE at Marion instead of Gortat. Which might bring his price down to something we feel more comfortable matching. Do you think Dallas would prefer Marion to Gortat? I think Marion duplicates a lot of what they have with Josh Howard and we know Dirk plays the 4 spot, while Gortat fits in perfectly as a mobile center that can run the break with Kidd. Also, I don't think Cuban would renege on the agreement he has with Gortat.

    Von Wafer

Nyce is a 100% correct. This guy is a selfish black hole that only cares about padding his point totals. He is also immature and has an overinflated opinion of his game. IMO he is not the type of player you win games with, and if we signed him, which I desperately hope we dont, SVG will relegate him to the end of the bench in no time. He looks good on highlight reels because he scores a lot of points, but he will not do anything but take shots. If we are looking for a scoring wing off the bench then I would prefer Flip Murray. At least he can play both guard positions and defend them as well.

I think Chasing Bass might not be what Otis is doing.

quote: Originally posted by MagicFanBen:I really think Anderson is our future Power Forward, but if we resign Gortat and Bring in Bass, you have to let the three of them fight it out to be the starter and let the best man win. The best case scenario is Anderson wins it and Bass and Gortat back him him because then we can just raise Gortat's value to the point we can be players in next summer free agents. Think about this. If we keep Tat and say give him 18-20 solid minutes and his stats just stay the same, we could be in the running for Amare with a trade of Gortat & Anderson. I am sure none of us would keep Anderson over Amare, but if you have a starting quality Center and a YOUNG Starting Power forward you can make a play for Amare. Bass can back up both positions and you are set for a long long time. Because it looks like the Suns will lose Amare or the Raps could lose Bosh. We might have the best package to offer with a CHEAP starting quality big man center in Tat and if we make another finals run or close to it with Anderson as the starter, he gets the attention like Courtney Lee got and there you can trade 2 quality big men, throw in Pietrus for Bosh or Amare and that is a fair trade on both sides since the Raps and Suns could lose them for nothing. Yea but if Anderson wins the starting job, do you really want two backups making the full MLE. I think it is clear that we will not resign Gortat and add another ML salary. We either add Gortat and fill out the roster with younger min players, or do the same with Bass, or split the MLE on a couple of players. Hopefully, tho we could convince Bass that starting for a championship contending team is worth accepting a less than MLE deal.

I think Chasing Bass might not be what Otis is doing.

quote: Originally posted by Darth Evil Dead:I think these summer league games might change that thought. In a years time....Ryan Anderson will be better then Bass. Anderson has the tools that will explode in our system. You sign Bass for 5 years, and Anderson will be starting over Bass in a years time. So I ask you this. In a years time, with both contracts being equal at 5 mil for 5 years. Which player will be easier to trade, and give you more value in return. Gortat or Bass? You know my answer... Thats a good point, and it might be a very realistic future scenario. However, we are currently in about a 2-3 year window to win the championship and a guy like Bass at PF helps us compete against the bigs of Boston, LA and SA. Anderson might very well be our future, and from what I've seen so far, I like him alot, but I don't think he's ready to play 20-25 min in pressure playoff series. We are trying to win now, and Bass or Gortat can play a curcial role in this. I think RA will play a more meaningful role 3-4 years down the line when we have a new group of guys, and a new window to win with Dwight. That reminds me, how great is it that our franchise player is only 23 years old. If we build our team right we can be like the Spurs and be a title contender for a decade.

I think Chasing Bass might not be what Otis is doing.

I think Otis is chasing Bass right now, but he is trying to convince him to take less than the MLE. That means that he is probably promising him a definite starting job next year. If we sign Bass, I expect it to be heavily backloaded with only about 3.5-4 mil given in the first year. This way we could still fill out our roster with about 3-4 million to spend. Maybe sign Ratliff for the vet min, Barnes for about 2 mil, and then Hendrix and Powell/Richardson/Robinson from the SL.
  21. I'll be very happy with Bass, Barnes, and Ratliff. Then Pargo or Russel Robinson, Hendrix, and Kasib Powell to fill out the bench.

Spurs likely to land McDyess; Not official yet(link)

He is gone. That is a very generous contract for him and he gets to start. Too bad, he would have been perfect for us,

Orlando/Big Baby conversation picking up speed [Gary Tanguay]

I wouldn't mind Davis at all. He seems like a player that is hungry to break out and show that he is a legit starter in this league and that last year's playoffs weren't a fluke. And he has obviously shown the will to work hard and improve his game. The guy averaged almost 17 points against us in the playoffs. That definetly counts for something. Not to mention he has spent the last couple of years watching KG go crazy in practice and in games, thus learning to play every game with great effort. It's no coincidence that the Spurs want him, and if he is good enough for them, then he would probably be a good pickup for us as well.

If Sheed tells the Magic NO could that be a blessing?

quote: Originally posted by VaBchMagicFan:If Sheed says no Bass is next on the list. Whether or not people on this board think Gortat can play PF does not matter. Otis and SVG don't think he can so he is gone. Otis already said that paying a guy that much to backup Dwight is to steep. Unfortunately if we don't get either one I think VC plays the SF and JJ is now a starter. We probably sign Von Wafer and a backup Center. God I hope not Von Wafer. He is one of the last guys I would ever want to see in a Magic uniform
